Alleon Hedden 905-878-7285 exil 3466 to appoint an independent body to review Uic salary cap and consider Uic workload and level of responsibility required of trustees. Current provincial legisiation limits boards to spending $5,000 for annual psy- ment to trustees. Trustees serving as vice- chairs may be paid an additional $2,500, while those serving as chairs can be paid an additional $5,000. AI Bailey, chair of thc Halton Catholic school board, doesn't believe trustees seek election for Uic cash. -I don't think anybody who nons as a trustee thinksthUey're going to make extra money at ot," he said. "It's a totally losing proposition as far as finances are con- cemed." Mr. Bailey said Uic lO toi 20 hours a week he spends on board business could easily be more profitable if he were to spend it working as his regular job. StilI, he worries that govemrment changes are making it more difficuit to attract people to run for Uic board. During Uic last election, ai Uiree Oakville trustees were acclainsed for their positions. The same legislation Uiat capped trustee salaries also cut Uic number of trustees ait- ting on most boards. Essentially, said Mr. Bailey, Uic goveru- ment doubled Uic workload for trustees and cut Uieir salaries. Prior to the legislation, most boards in Uic province paid trustees between $l10,000 and $20,000 a year. However, some Toronto-area boards considered their trustees fuil-time and paid Uiem according- ly. Oakville Trusece Alice Anne LeMay, who estimated she also spends between 10 and 20 hours a week on board business, said she's worried by Uic low number of candidates who ran in Uic last election. 'Education is a big part of your tax dol- lar," she said. "Where's Uic conceru" /2/4A Zi/A//<JAIà No shakos, shots or bars £fTcfWa~~-'EbU7Ie-~' L-. ~~8- 6 67~V7.'W Lose Up toi7 Ibs./wk.
