In bis report 'Keeping Ontario Industries Competitive in tise Global Market', released last Tuesday, Mr. Cisudîcigs set out 23 recommendations ta boost the standing of Ontario businesses. "Ontario must be competitive ta main- tain a strong ecunomy,' said M. Cisudîcigis, parliamentary assistant ta Bob Runciman, minister of economic develop- ment and trade. "I believe tbe recommen- dations for these consultations and discus- sions with players in a number of Ontario's key sectors will help us to raite our level of competitivenets in tise global market- place." Reacting to the report, Mr. Runciman alto announced Iast Tuesday the Province is prepared to move forward with several of tise recommendations, including tise ettablishment of a construction industry advitory counicil, a $l100,000 investment ta support tise formation of a Toronto angel group (an informai group of potential investors seeking opportunitY) ta screefl business opportunities, and the hosting of an angel investmnent forum in April. "The Ontario government constantly seeks new ways ta, ensure aur busmnesses can attract, maintain and retain invest- mients and jobs," thse minister said. "By moving forward immediately on some key recommendations, our govemn- ment is working ta ensure our province maintains a vibrant capital market - a market tisat is essential ta Ontario's eco- nomic expansion and international comn- petitiveness." Added Mr. Cisudîcigis: "Perisapa tise most important recommendation from Halton's standpamnt is a cal ta, reduce or climinate tax on capital gains arising from investments in companies with assets under $5 million. "l've also indicated that Ontario should press the federal goverament ta, match this provision. The result would be a competi- tive position for investors who might oth- erwise consider investing in American companles.
