6-The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, January 15, 2002 ~COMMENT Lowering BAC too \. mucli of an extreme Drunk dniving is a terrible thing and we feel for families that have lost loved ones in alcohol-related crashes. But we have to be careful flot to go to an extreme in trying to combat -'fWHAT the problem.Doy i7 That's why we agree with the Canada Safety Counicil, which believes Iowering motorists' legal limit of blood alcohol content (BAC) would have no impact on the majority of drinkinig drivers responsible for fatal RECOEND As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Canada is lobbymng for the goverfiment to lower the BAC from iiID c ? 0.8 to 0.5. E D C ? That would mean someone drivmng after one beer could be charged even though they're flot impaùred. As long as alcohol is arounid, drunk drivmng will probably neyer be wiped out altogether. But we can keep up the fight and make an impact through continued public education backed by tougli punishment for those convicted. Lowering the BAC to 0.5 won't stop the chronic drunk drivers who dlaim lives, it will only add to our already over-burdened court system. Dear Edior: imagine thse scene -new snow- boards for Christnmas, three excited I 2-year-olds eager to learn to snowboard and what a better place to do so ahan Gien Eden. Upon pisoning Glen Eden to inquire about lessons, t waa impressed with the helpful and knowledgeable person who was able t0 answer ail my questions and I duly booked lessons for Friday, Jans. 4 ait 6 pa. Arriving at 5 pan. to ensure we were there in plenty of time, I was directed toward the car parking ares. it was dark and tisere was vir- tuaily no liglsting. Seeing a lime of cars parked on the grass on thc left aide of thc road adjacent to the railway lie fence, I parked any vebicle and we proceed- ed to the ski centre. Again, we were impressed by the instruction that our children received. After the lesson the chil- dren decided that they wanted to stay and continue to snowboard. The aduits decided to go for a meal and retumed to the vebicle at 8:15 pan., only to tind a parking infraction ticket that had been issued at 6:.31 pan., inforaning me that we were parked on private property. Obviously conceaned about this, t tooked for a no parking sign, and Iow and behold there was a amali sign well about eye level, and virtu- aily impossible to see in thse dark. Now one bas to ask thse question, if it's thse intention not to slow vebicles to be parked where we did - and 1 would perfectly under- Pud mng signa flot more visible? If of course, as seems possible, it is simply the intention to gouge Sig- nificant parking fees from as many unsuspecting patrons as possible, then I assume that the present situ- ation will remain. In conclusion, what started out to be a veay enjoyable family outing was soured by wbat appears to be a money grab for parking fines? I'm sure that l'an flot alone in this view, as upon speaking to other parents, their view was the samne. I would suggest tbat you give consideration to placing more effective no-parking signage, unleas of course it's the intention to, continue to simply generate wbat must be significant income from parking fines.
