Jodhan secs the good and bad side of kids as police's new high sehool liason officer By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion I t took a while for Const. Denise Jodhan to blend in as a regular face in north Halton high schools. "When I firsi started, i could hear the kids say, 'wbo's that, why is a police officer bere, what happened?' It took a few weeks for tbem to get so know me. Const. Jodban became the new high sehool liaison officer for Halton Regional Police in September. "I liaison between the schools and the police," said the seven-year veteran of the force. "Its important to designate an officer b the schools b deal with issues such as threats or drugs." Const. Jodban divides ber time between the three high schools in town and the ones in Georgetown and Acton. She visits eacb school once a week. "I go into the schools and explain what my role is at the scbool and then I do an opcn forum for the kids to ank me questions," she said. "We talk about the law, what to do if you get busted for drugs. The kids taik about their experiences witb the law. The ones who havent had to deal with the law don't ask a lot of questions. They rcalize not every officer is the same." The questions Const. Jodhan are asked range from has she ever fired her gun To how officers get free coffee from Tim Horions. "They bave a lot of questions about thc Tobacco Act," she said. "There's no offence for smoking underage, you juat can't purchase ciga- rettes. A lot of students think you can gel a tick- et if you're caught smoking underage - you can't." Const. Jodban will visit one clans a day' usual- ly a law or science claas, and spend the rest of her day in a room in the guidance office if any- one wants to talk. She decided 10 take the position as the bigb school ilaison officer because she wanted a cbance to work witb youtb. "It's exactly wbat I tbougbt il would be. You see the good aide of tise kids, not only tise bad like wben you're driving around in the cruiser. l'm having a good lime." Conat. Jodhan will visit the achools until June and thon start her rounds again in September, she said. "Tt's good that parents know there is an officer in their kid's scisouls."
