'Couple contributes $ 100,000 for mammograpFhy machine By FANNIE SUNSMINE The Champion Boyke and Dicky Deumer aren't the type of peo- ple who like being in the spotlight. But thse Campbellville couple found themseîves there when they donated $100,000 to thse Milton District Hospital Foundation to go toward the pur- chase of a new mammography machine. "We understood there was a need for a new mammography unit," Mr. Deumer said. "We thought about it, thought we could do it (donate) and did it." Although there's cancer in Ms Deumer's family, that's not why shte and hier husband decided to donate toward a new mammog- raphy unit. "4We've supported the hospital for years. tt's not personal, not at ail. Tlhe whole community will benefit from this. There was a need so we donated," she said. And the hospital founidation is closing in on its $180,000 goal. To date, $150.000 bas bren raised for a new mammography machine. "A gift of this calibre really leaves you speechleso," said Donna McLaughlin, hospital foundation co-ordinator, adding the new mammorrgraphy unithas bren ordered and should be arriving at the hospital within thse next few weeks. 1I want to, thank the Deumers and the commumty andr anyone else who still wants to donate. We've had donations ranging from $50 to $100,000 and each one is as important." Wbile the current mammogra- phy machine used at Milton District Hospital is still in work- ing condition, il's not compatible with some of the newer breast cancer screening technologies. With new equîpment, Milton District Hospital will be able to provide clearer, more accurate mammography results. By RICHARD VIVIAN The Champion There wilI be some big deci- sions made next year in terms of Milton's future, says Mayor Gord Krantz. -There are some pretty big projects we'll have to come to, grips with. We're probably talking in the neighbourhood of $25, $30 million with regards to some of these deci- sions," hie told The Champion. Heading up the list of pending decisions is the fate of two existing and une proposed municipal facilities. A recent study indicates the cuntent Town Hall and Milton Public Library buildings don't bave the rom to accommodate future demands for service. The need for an arts and cultural centre has also been iden- tified. ý/Christmas fund totals big $24,279 Miltonians have again shown their gen- erous nature, contribuiing nearly $25,000 to The Canadiari Champion's annual Salvation Army Christmas Bureau Fund. In total. $24,279 was raised to help local needy families enjoy the holidays. 1I think its pretty amazing considering the year it's bren," said Canadian Champion receptionist and campaign organizer Sheena Cameron of the final total. ,,Milton is a great town - it seems to come through ail the time." Many of the donations came in at the last minute, piling in on Christmas Eve, Ms Cameron added. "That was a great day for donations." More than 190 individual contributions were made to the fund - the largest of which weighed in at $2,500. In order to meet the demand. the Town is considening several construction options. including: Expanding Town Hall at the existing site (43 Brown St.) and building the library and arts and Gord Krantz cultural centre on the Milton Hydro/Lions Park site (corner of Thompsots Road and Main Street). - Developing the existing Town Hall into the arts and cultural centre and putting a new Town Hall and library on the Milton Hydro/Lions Park site. - Putting aIl tbree facilities at the Milton Hydro/Lions Park site. "Not ail those will be built next year. but decisions will be made witb regards to going abead or not going abead and the timing," Mr. Krantz said.
