The Canadian Champion, Fniday, December 7, 2001-21 WHTSWTHTETEVE DAYS 0F CHRISTMAS?!! T heT I t enH l o r d a - e a i g e e h Over the holiday season, many voices loudly proclaim their message of Christmas. Some urge us to make it the best Christmas ever by taking advantage of special discounts. Others remind us to make sure that each of the kids have fiad a, chance to sit on Santa's knee. Stili others encourage us to make our list and check it twice to ensure that we don't forget that special someone. Sadly, somewhere in the midst of our world's many Christmas messages, we have lost its real meaning - that special someone bas been forgotten. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ - the incarnation of God. Thankfully, this season's songs still announce the truth. Choirs still herald: Joy to the world, the Lord is corne! Carollers stili cheer: Corne and worship! Corne and worship! Worship Christ the newborn King! And children still sing: A partridge 4eBANAI Informai Discussions every Wednesday evening 7he VI" uofLoycily For Inf coul: 905-878-0011 Redemption "Fix your gaze upon Hlm Who is the Temple of God amongst men. Here is one Christmas Carol that bas often confused even the most ardent believer. What in the world do Leaping lords, French hens, Swimming swans, and a Partridge who won't corne out of a pear tree have to do with Christmas?!! How did this strange song become a Christmas carol? A friend of mine, John Hrycko, helped cure my curiosity by sharing this trivial historical tidbit with me. 1 found it quitle interesting and enlightening. Apparently, from 1558 until 1829, Christians in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote the Christmas carol as a catechism song for young believers. It bas two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. The partridge in the pear tree was Jesus Christ. Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments. Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love. The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The five golden rings recalled the first five books of the Old Testament often referred to as the Torah, the Law or the Pentateuch. The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit - Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy. The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes. Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control. Ten Commandments. The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples. The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed. Wow! Profound truth is found hidden behind the shroud of symbolism. Many hear the message of The Twelve Days qf' Christmnas yet miss the real meaning. How true of our society - beautifully adorned Christmas trees can be seen nearly everywhere we go, Santa Claus is in every maîl, homes are decorated with bright lights and orniaments, stores are filled with frantic shoppers seeking special gifts - yet many have forgotten the genuine origin of our festive celebration. Make it a December to Remember! Rediscover the true meaning of Christmas. Allow one of our local churches lîsted below to help you find more meaning in the Christmas message. Determine to visit a local congregation this week! Submitted by Reverend Dan Rogge, Senior Pastor of New Life Church, Milton
