6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, December 4, 2001 COMMENT AD ENME N Money well spent on ESN\HTEWOP new Under 12 Project'SOL RA Halton Regionai Police and the Children's Assessment and Treatment Centre are starting. a new program that aims to keep pre-M A teen boys from graduating to higher levels of crime before it's too late to correct their behaviour. The Under 12 Project (see page 8) is another in a senies of pro-active policing methods that see police trying to head off trouble rather than react to incidents. And for that, we should ail be grateful. From our point of view, the $185,000 in federal fundmng that's per- mitting the program to begin, is taxpayers' money well spent. Many people aren 't great fans of the current Young Offenders Act, but the proposed Young Criminal Justice Act, which is expected to become law next year, should do much to deal with leniency and other issues. It will encourage more 'diversion' programs to keep kids out of our legal systemn and get them back on track before the die is cast for a life of criminal acts. In the Under 12 Project, police hope to reach boys in 90 families a year. We wish ail invoived in the Under 12 Project great success -espe- cially the boys. Then Mitoui Cuuitia Champiorn a RecciNe Prodiet Dear Editor: At a public meeting November 6 at Hugli Fosier Hall, the consultants described the options available with respect to the possi- ble locations of eacb of the proposed Town Hall additions, the central library and in particular a performing arts centre. Conspicuously missing fromt this discus- sion was the acknowledgement of the bis- torical value of our existing downtown core. Given the substantial investmena in reno- vation rosas by residents nd business own- ers over the past 20 - nd tbe fart thai rommuniaies sncb as Kitchener/Waterloo, Guelph nd Oakville locate tbeir cultural rentres in tic historiral ares of town - it seemed unusual tbey wonld ronsider a location ai Main Street nd Tbompson Road. There's only one appropriate site for our arts nd cultural centre nd abat's the rasi parking lot of the Town Hall. The Town Hall shonld continue toi oper- aie witb addiîional office spare being built on Uic site of Uic old police station, with the women's residenre moved hoi the Allendale sea. Tbere's stili room for tbe sets and cul- tural centre nd tbe remaining ares would suill provide selecteil parking for Town staff. Tbe Town would argue ibere's insuf- ficient parking. However, wben you con- sider performances ai tbe centre take place in tbe evening, after business bours and mny sboppers bave refi tbe ares, ibere would bie ample parking available. On November 8, 1 wrote thc Toronto Consultants EDA Collaborative, express- ing my conrems nd offering abus approarb to tbe location of Uic arts nd cultural ren- tre for tbeir ronsideration. Wr bave an opportunity to support our bistoriral rommunity nd our downtown business, wbirb we must not overlook. It's time toi rome togeaber on abus impor- tant issue by writing, pboning nd faxing our town counrillors to, encourage tbem to support us in our efforts to maintain tbe cul- tural rontinuity and prosperity of ibis unique rommnnity.
