The Fire Marshal's Office recently conducted a Municipal Fire Protection Information Survey of Milton - an initiative it's doing in municipalifies across the province -and found Milton needs a more effective smoke alarm program. "Based on our analysis of infor- mation gathered to date, your municipality is not currently pro- viding the minimum required serv- ices in tire prevention and public education in accordance with the community needs as prescribed in the FPPA (Fire Protection and Prcvention Act)," reads a letter f0 Mayor Gord Krantz from the Fire Marshal's Office. But new firefighters set to stars next month will go a long way toward bringing Milton into com- pliance, Fire Chief Harold Penson told the Town's community servic- es committee November 26. "Council knows we're hiring on somne more people very short ly, in December, and these people seilI assiot in this effective smoke alarm program, inspection of homes (when there's concem) and the handing out of informnation to the public,' he said. "We are working towards bring- ing our tire prevention issues up f0 standard." With the addition of fOve tire- tighters. Mr. Penson said he hopes t0 have a more effective smoke alarm program up and munning by March. "A smoke alarmn programn will address t he problemis we're having riglif nose," hie continued. "We are finding now thaf people have smoke alanns, but there's no bat- teries in them. So this (home inspections) is somcething we're going to have to gef info." When t he fire departmenf is called f0 a location and findo there are no smoke defectors or no work- ing batteries in the defectors, a defector and/or batteries are pro- vided on boan. The materials are f0 be retumed f0 the tire deparfmenf once appropriaf e replacement s have been purchased and installed by the proper y owner. Short-comings derived from the survey must be kepf in perspective, Town CAO Mario Belvedere told the commiftee. 'These are new regulations and Milton is one of tlic first eighf communities surveyed. 1 would imagine we're nof atone in this." Town staff were insfmucfed by the commitfee f0 work wifh the Milton Fire Deparfment f0 bring t he fown info compliance with the standards of the FPPA. 1Bureau fund needs big boost The Champion's Christmas Bureau Fund is inching towarda its 2001 fargef.
