The Canadian ChamDoon, Friday, November 23, 2001-B5 $180,000 for mammography unit Current mammography machine used at Milton hospital too old By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion To help women receive the best care for detect- ing breast cancer, the Milton District Hospital Foundation is embark- ing on .a campaign to raise funds to purchase a new mammography machine. "The current machine ai Milton District Hospital is a lit- le dated," said Kin Mason, hospital founidation board member and chair of the mam- mography fundraiting camn- paign. "(A mammography machine) is an essential piece of equipment for the early detection of breasi cancer." Milton District Hospital (MDH) performs 1,600 main- mography examinations each year. Currently, the hospital's ability 10 provide this service - ai the highest level of quali- ty - is being reduced as a result of the age of the current mammography unit, which is nearing the 10-year mark. While the machine now used ai MDH is stilli n working con- dition, it's not compatible with some of the newer breast cani- cer screening technologies. With new equipment, MDH will be able te, provide clearer. more accurate mammography resuits. The new mamrmography unit will cost $180.000. A state-of- the-art General Electric model has already been carefully selected, Ms Mason said. "We're looking 10 the town for support," she said, addmng the hospital foundation has sent out letters to homes and corpo- rations in town asking for donations. "We're trying t0 raise awareness of the need for a new unit in Milton." The first donation was made hy the Royal Bank in the amounit of $9,500, she said. 'ln May we're having a gala ai Rattlesnake Point (Golf Club) which we hope wili be the fmnal fundraising event. We hope t0 have the new mam- mography machine in Milton by May ai the latest." A mammography is an X-ray of the breast. It can be used 10 determine if a lump is a gland, cyst or a tumnour and is also used in the detection of breast cancer. Milton District Hospital Foundation is an independent, registered charity founded in 1980 for the purpose of raising funds for MDH and the pur- chase of urgently-needed med- ical equipment.
