"It's a very different mind-set titan te people today, wito don't appear to be interested (in Remembrance Day)," said Mr. Benry, a retired commander in the Royal Canadian Navy. "I wasn't alive for the First (World) War, but my fatiter served and my uncle was decorated ini F'rance. 1 grew up wjth an understand- ing of witat w a s required to fight a war. 1 was very privileged to figitt in the Second (World) Wa.r." Witit his Peter Berry fatiter having served in lte Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve, Mr. Berry made te deci- sion 10 enlist in lte navy when he came of age in 1942. Tite news of luis enlistment, hie saîd, was a shock to, iis parents, who itad hoped hie would continue itis education at Queen's University. He was already enrolled when hie decided te navy was a better path to lake. "ýBut t didn't care. 1 went back in te fail and joined the navy. If I hadn't jomned up, they probably would have been more upset." After training at thte Naval College in Halifax, Mr. B3erry start- ed down a road titat would take itim ltrougit 24 years of service.
