"I don't believe taxpayer money should be used to support special interest groups," said Councillor Rick Maibocuf. "Taxpayer money belongs to ail citizens, including those in opposition." Tlhose comments came on the heels of a proposai by Councillor John Challinor that would have seen a policy developed to pro- vide up to $25,000 in funding for citizens' groups complimenting the town's position 1in legai and quaai-judiciai planning pro- ceedings. Mr. Challinor waa the only niember of counicil to vote in favour of the policy. Councillor Wally Hunter waa absent fromn the meeting. Halton's H20 continues to measure up Haiton water continues to meet Ontanio Drinking Water Standards. The Water Quality Quarterly Report released Tuesday shows standards were met between July and September of this year. "Again this quarter, Haiton haa demon- strated the ability to meet the provincial water quality standards. Providmng safe, dlean drinking water for Haiton is one of our cote businesses and we take the job very seriously,' said Patrick Murphy, the Region's commissioner of planning and public works. "I'11m really concerned when we talk about establishing policy about anything, let alone sometbing, as contentious as this."1 1I brought this motion forward because I don't want to see decisions (on funding cit- izens' groups) handled in an arbitrary faah- ion. With the growth Milton is experienc- ing, we're going to see a lot more of these types of challenges in the future. We will be poorer for not encouraging this type of involvement," Mr. Challinor said about the hours and personal dollars spent by the Fniends of E.C. Drury Park (Friendt) and Residents Affected by Intermodal Lmnes (RAIL) in their fights in support of town ae.
