Charmes Currie, 43, is cbarged witb 17 counts of fraud under $5,000 and one count of fraud over $5,000. Seven people took thse stand this week to recouns tbeir dealings at the furniture store. Among tbem, Jeremy Brooks testified be and bis wife purcbased a queen sized sleigb bed fromt tbe shop in November 1999. "We felt comfortable paying tbe full amount of $684 because it was a friendly, local shop." By January tbe bcd stili hadn't arrived, Mr. Brooks told tbe court, so he calied Mr. Currie once more. "We put a $700 deposit down by cheque, whicb was requested by the person we deait with and said delivery would be between four and six weeks. When we did- n's receive thse armoire, 1 started calling tbe shop and leavmng messages until early July. In October I called tbe store and reached Charles and told him 1 wanted my money back. He said I would have to speak to Oriena (Mi. Currie's motber) because sbe had a number of tbefts from tbe store and waa having a bard time making refunds. He told me to cati later but 1 got thse answering machine.
