Anitc, PliýIC backlasil to a proposccl 42 per cent raise this spring, the responsibility of determining an approptiate increase was handed to Integrity Commnissioner Gregory Evans. Earlier this week, Mr. Evans announced MJ>Ps would receive a 3 per cent raise retroactive to April 1 and an additional 3 per cent each year until the next election - expected ini 2003. Followmng the election, salaries will rise by 25 percent. 've neyer liked the idea that MPPs vote on their own salary. I've always thought that was very suspicious and I think the public does too," said Mr. Chudteigh. 'l like the way that this salary increase is han- dled by the integrity commissioner, which is an appropriate person to look at these tbings." MPPs previously eamed a $78.007 annu- al salary. Following the next election, salaries wil tise to $106,554. This is the first raise MPPs have received since 1990. In 1995, under the NDP gov- emment, MPPs accepted a 5.5 per cent pay decrease. The integrity commnissioner's decision to raise salaries was a necessary one, Mr. Chudleîgh continued. Without the incrcased salary, it would be difficuit to attract and keep political figures who could eamn more working in -the pri- vate sector, he said. "The Ontario government is a $60-bil- lion-a-year operation. That's about the samne size, 1 think, as the Ford Motor Company world-wide. You want some pretty good people running an enterprise that size and ils appropriate that you pay a salary that would attract those people," he said. "If you don't have a very good compen- sation package, what you get is a group of individuals who are wealthy in their own righs running for politica. That creates a govemment for the rich and by the rich." -CORRECTION NOTICE- "We wish to point out that a prînting error appears in" The Canadian Champion Phone Book regarding the location of the place of practice of Dr. Debbie Hawkins.
