According to president Steve Cheng, the non-profit, non- political and non-denomina- tional organization of commu- nity-minded volunteers also aspires to help Chinese Canadians in a variety of ways as well as to enrich Halton at large. Bring Chinese together Mr. Cheng explained the underlying philosophy of the association is to bring together Chinese Canadians in Halton to promote cultural education, understanding and interaction with the community at large. "Our goal is to get the mem- bership involved," said Mr. Cheng, who explained that last year a Chinese New Year din- ner raised money for Oakville- Trafalgar lyemorial Hospital (OTMH). Objectives of the association include the promotion of multi- culturalism, the preservation of Chinese culture and heritage, active citizenship and to pro- vide support to other local non- profit and charitable organiza- tions and community projects. Mr. Cheng said the group also wants to identify and address relevant social, educa- tional, cultural and recreational needs and issues. To help newcomers to Canada, the association plans to offer a referral service to Chinese professionals and community services, such as doctors or lawyers who speak Mandarin. According to Mr. Cheng, the 1996 Census revealed about 4,500 Chinese live in Halton. There are two Chinese schools in Oakville and another in Burlington. It was not until the OTMH fundraiser, however, that the volunteers realized they all shared a similar philos- ophy for an association - that being a group in possession of not only social graces but a social conscience. "After five meetings we decided to form this associa- tion," said Mr. Cheng, who added that Chinese associa- tions in Peel and Hamilton are helping out. "People are very supportive." Festival to be held In addition to recruiting members, the HRCCA is mar- keting itself by contacting area politicians and business people, and in the fall will use Halton's Chinese schools as conduits of information to parents. Mr. Cheng also said the group hopes to organize a mid- autumn festival which is very popular in China. Other planned activities range from a Chinese New Year banquet to outdoor family barbecues.
