It had to end sometime and for the Milton Red Sox a i 3-game winning streak wal stopped Monday night in a 9-8 loss to Guelph at Maplehurst. The Red Sox dug themselves an early hole when they trailed 5- 0 after the Royals had batted twice. Steve Spiers had early control problemns, hitting two batters and throwing some wild pitches. Just as he started to corne around, a two-out dribbler through the inield handed Guelph two runs. By the third inning Spiers was humming, but manager Jef Harper said after the game that he was mostly interested in getting three innings of work for three pitchers in preparation for a big toumnament this weekend. The Red Sox got a couple runs back in the bottom of the second inning when Ryan Harper and Michael Voipe reached base on walks, stole their way around, and then were driven in by an oppo- site field smash off the bat of Chris Dumencu. They picked up another in the third when Evan Jeans raced home front third on a wild pitch, but then blew a big opportunity when they had the bases loaded with nobody out and couidn't bring in a mun. It almost happened again in the fourth inning. With Spiers and Scott Connoily resting on third and second with nobody out, Guelph brought in a new pitcher who struck out the tirst two men hie faced and then had two strikes on dlean-up hâtter, Conan O'Brien. O'Brien ripped il mbt right field, scoring both runners, and then was driven home by Harper to give Milton a 6-5 lead. Dumencu pitched two scoreiess innings in relief and was on his way to a third when the Red Sox blew a rundown play between third and home, allowing a runner to score, and then a Texas Lecaguer fell in to score another and give Guelph a 7-6 Iead. 'he Red Sox altemated in the field between sloppy and compe- tent. They tumned a nice double play in the seventh 10 get out of a bases Ioaded nobody out situation, and catcher Jeans made a spec- tacular catch of a foui bail as welI as throwing out a runner trying t0 steai third. Volpe could have held the Royals scorcîcas over the final three frames if not for errors resulting in unearned muns. The Red Sox got one back in the seventh after Harper reached base tor the tourth consecutive time, and was driven in by Volpe. O'Brien smashed a double to bring home Jeans for Milton's other mun. The Red Sox got munners to second and third in the ninth inning but couldn't get them home. The big blow was Paul Duff being called oui on a questionable third-strike appeal cali. Jeff Harper wasn't too upset about the bass or that the winning streak had been stopped. You don't wîn 13 games in a row with- oui being good, as welI as having a little Iuck. "Eventually, the breaks are going to go against you. Guelph is the best team we've piayed in a month. They're probably the best hitting teami in the league." Harper suggested il wasn't a must-win game cr he might have done some things differently. They were preparing for an impor- tant AAA toumnament this weekend in St. Catharines. Milton has a 21-6 overali record and is 15-4 in league games. -,E Miton Minor Basbail Association KC.olî,0o3.m 1.,Iyl., 400 Canadien Ta, 7 Fitth Wh..I 100 0,0,43,,,Tirs.12 14f..ty.s 47va FfW l 10 va- 1 Caien i. 12 C,,0,stl. 70v Mltoo Ti ,,oooo7 BCF Asocoat* 0 v G.gtooo 2 Cartel. 6 JIVa B,340,03 olo,,,s 26 C0,eaol CMe-ialS. 170v Milto TCransmissin01 Knighls of Columbus 2 v Kfighl. f Columbus, 00 C.or,pb.eol, KnighI. of Columbs ,70, 04.,, Auto 15»o Pâti.r of th.
