The Ca nadian Chamion. Fniday, JuIy 13, 2001 -11 CHILDREN, BLESSIN G OR BURDEN? L ast month, St. Paul's produced our annual worship service and supper for the needy people who attend the Wesley Urban Ministries Drop-In Centre in Hamilton. The members of our congregation get a great deal of satisfaction from this activity and the men, women and children who ate the B.B.Q. supper certainly seemed to enjoy it. In Micah 6:8, we are told that God requires us not only to "Love kindness" but also to "Seek justice" We are flot only asked to act charitablyby helping others but also to address the causes of their situation. Actually meeting the people served by our efforts led me to reflect further on how they came to be in need and what could be done to prevent poverty. Probably the most effective. strategy is to give everyone, from the time of their conception, the best possible opportunity to be healthy in mind and body. Then, we should to provide educational opportunities that allow them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Even in a country as wealthy as Canada, we fait far short of that goal. Earlier this year, 400 faith leaders from across Canada called upon our governments to invest in children thr ough practical programs such as income supports to families, child care and secure, affordable housing. What is needed is the will to act as though we really see all children born as a opportunity,i public purse. blessing and an not a burden on the Submitted by Wendy Schau, Chair of Outreach, St. Paul's United Chu rch.
