/MMCR progressing slowly, project still in need of funds By FANNIE SUNSHINE The Champion Milton's senior citizens requiring partial living assistance will have to wait a while longer to move into a residence designed specifically for them. "When the story was written in November (in The Champion) we were still hoping to get money through a fund drive, but that didn't happen," said Karl Reichert, chair of the Milton Millennium Community Residence (MMCR). "Now we're talking to potential lenders to secure the start-up money of $1 million." MMCR is a non-profit registered charity, formed four years ago, aiming tq create a facility for seniors who though fairly independent, require some living assistance. The group hopes to break ground on the project later this year or early in 2002, said Mr. Reichert. And if all goes well, the facility's first occupants will be moved in by February, 2003. Before undertaking the project, MMCR completed a survey to determine whether an assisted living facility was needed in town. Results indicated there are about 861 units for assisted living in Halton Region, but none in Milton, despite a significant demand for them locally. "The study concluded the residence will fill up in less than nine months," Mr. Reichert explained. The residence, to be located at 45 Martin St. will be a four-storey building with two wings. Each wing will consist of bed-sit suites (one living area) or one or two suites (one bedroom, plus a living area. Some will also have a den and storage facilities). Al 75 units will have an in-suite bathroom, a kitchenette with a fridge and outlets for small appliances, an emergency call service and telephone and cable jacks. The suites are designed with wheelchair bounded people in mind, so the light switches as well as the windowsills will be lower and the door frames will be wider. Each level will also have a lounge, which overlooks the Mill Pond and Niagara Escarpment to the west, as well as a caregiver station. Residents can access staff, who will be available for medication management, bathing and other personal care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The main level will consist of a dining area, a kitchen and an assembly room. The basement will offer storage space for the residents, a lounge, hair- dressing and physiotherapy rooms. The price of occupancy ranges from $2,000 to $3,000 per month, which includes three meals a day as well as laundry and housekeeping services for the 85 occupants. If seniors can't afford the rent, MMCR will try to help with the cost by either hosting fund-raisers or seeking govemment assistance. Although MMCR is seeking start-up funds through bans, the organization is still in need of community donations.
