22-The Canadian Champion, Friday, June 8, 2001 «Local student one of 377 in Ontario to get scholarship Milton's Lindsey Harrold was one of 377 Ontario stu- dents chosen to receive excel- lence awards from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. Excellence awards are given in recognition of academic achievement, commitment to community service, dedication to innovation and proven lead- ership abilities. Each recipient will receive cash awards to be used toward the cost of their studies at uni- versity or college. "I heard about the awards on the news last year," the 18- year-old OAC E.C. Drury High School student said. "My friends were talking about it and I went to their web site to fill out the application form." Ms Harrold received the Provincial Award, a $4,000 scholarship renewable for up to four years. A National Award scholar- ship of $4,800, renewable for up to four years, and a Local Award of a one-time $4,000 scholarship were also avail- able. "I've been accepted to the Ivy School of Business at the University of Western for next year," she said. "(The scholar- ship) wili help pay for tuition." Ms Harrold attributes her scholarship award to her lengthy list of extra curricular activities. "I've been with the Girl Guides since I was six and I'm now a Brownie leader." She's also taken violin les- sons since grade 6, is the con- cert leader of the Halton Youth Symphony, head of the school's music council, captain of the varsity soft bail team and also writes the high school report for The Champion. "I thought I had a good chance of winning because of ail the things I'm involved in," Ms Harrold said. The recipients represent a diverse group preparing for their post-secondary education said Norman Riddell, execu- tive director and CEO of the foundation. "What they ail have in common is that they have the potential to become Canada's future business, social and community leaders."
