6 - The Canadian Champion, usaJn5,20 <COMMENT Great ail-round effort 1: 5EE CONRP LACK on Showcase Milton WAIANS T 'ROPHIS, The Milton Chamber of Commerce should be congratulated for putting on an excellent Showcase Milton 2001 over the weekend. The event was well-organized and séemed to go off without a hitch. At the same time, the more than 100 exhibitors - all true profes- sionals - deserve recognition as well. Their booths were nicely designed and decorated, effectively promoting their products and services. ( It was interesting to see that the event flot only attracted local citi-& zens, but also soon-to-be Miltonians. Several people who visited our booth proudly told us they were from out of town and had recently purchased homes in the new developrnents.anana vtndw We hear Showcase Milton may becomeannuaeenndw hope it does. Excellent products and services are already here. But business pro- motion, especially with growth, will be the key to developing and maintaining a thriving local economy. O UR READERS WRITE Students need these arts pro qrams Reader concerned about termînails impact Dear Editor: I wîsh ta write a response ta the article in the Fridey, May 25 paper, 'Scbool arts programs being squeezed: Andrew' 1 can't agree more with Eric Andrew's comments about tihe squeeze on art pro- grams. It really struck a chord with me. My youngest son bas been fortuate ta have had the constant encouragement af two wonderful music teachers t Bishop Reding, Mr. Card and Mr. Alfana. I'm convinced thet these gifted individuels and other teachers like themn encourage kids ta stay in school. When we hear tise music progranis, ibrary and literacy pro- grams are under constant tbreat, we're left feeling frustrated and angry. Students need these programs.. Students at 0I.1.E. have sbown that one of the mast important factors that keep kids irom dropping out of high school is the fact that one teecher shows an interest in them and ceres about them. This is what programts like music, drama and sports do for our kids. My sincere thanks also to Joe Orlando, another gift- ed musician and teacher thet we're fortu- nate la have here in Milton. As a resident of Milton, Im con- cemned about the planned CN termi- nal and the impact thîs venture will have on our community. This facility will impact ail of your constituents' daily lives. If your constituents live near the facil- ity they will suifer lrom noise, light, and air pollution. T1hose who live further away will have to deal with more traific congestion from a daily tally of 1,000 trucks accessing the facility. Our region's existing roads will be beaten to a pulp from the 40,000 tonnes a day of extra traific. Ail of your constituents will pay higher taxes to support the extra cost oi road maintenance and new con- hearings. struction due to the intermodal facility. There are serious questions about the economic ieasibility of the geo- graphic location of this intermodal lacility. Its generally accepted that these facilities require a threshold of about 1,000 miles of rail travel beiore transferring to short haul trucking to be profitable. It's my understanding that this facility will primarily serve a leos than 500-mile radius. It would appear that CN could be building a white elephant, like Mirabel, that nobody wanted and nobody uses. I would expect that you, as our representative, would reserve your apparent support of this project and insist that the Canadian Transportation Agency review this proposai beginning with public iacility in the GTA, it should bc built on land that is immediately adjacent to a 400 series highway where the trucks could bave direct acceus and egress irom the iacility. The trucks accessing the proposed site will require about 30 minutes travel time fromn Hwy. 401 to the iacility. TMat extra cost is about $26 million annually. The facility juot got a little less viable. Theres a significant economic, social, ond health coot of this pmej- ect that the people of Halton will be iorced to bear. Theres doubt whether CN can run this facility in the black. The location choice is seriously flawed. There's no practi- cal reason for this project to go for- ward. Please stop now.
