Thats the message Milton Concert Presentations is trying to get across to the town, after the group nearly disbanded over a lack of available space for their per- formances. "We were using Southaide Community Church for our con- certs ast season," said Milton Concert Presentations member Caroline Konarzewski. "We put on tive concerts and they were ail seil- out crowds. We have plans for six concerts this coming season but the church told us they were no longer interested in renting out the space 10 us. Its left us in an awkward position because it was hard lrying to find a place ihat would accom- modate the orchestra." So the organization went to St. Paul's United Church for help. There was no problem finding the 380 seats needed to accommo- date the audience for the concerts ai the cburch, but titting in the orchestra required a litile maneu- vering. "The orchestra wouldn't fit unlesa we removed the firsi few pews or the choir's pews," Ms Konarzewski said. "We were under pressure (to ind a location) because our new season begins in Seplember. Benson and Hedges offered 10 prisai our pro- gram free of charge but il had 10 be done quickly." The choir pews were removed to allow for the orchestra, she said. "The conductor of the Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra came in and said the orchestra would fit but they wouldn't be siîting in the proper layout; the string instru- ments would be spread out so they wouldn't be in the proper forma- tion." Il tise organization hadîs t hc'n permitted to hold the concerts at St. Paul's United Church Ihen the Milton Concert Presentations would've folded, Ms Konarzewski said. "They (St. Paul's United Church) came to our rescue. This really shows how important il is 10 have a centre for the arts in Milton." Dean Martin, chairman of the Board of EIders at Southside Community Church, said rentai of the church to outaide groups such as the Milton Concert Presentations began 10 interfere with the scheduling of church- related events. "As an Elder's Board, we reluc- tantly but definitely agreed that the key mission and minislry of Souibside, as a Christian church in Milton, was of greater importance than the rentai of the facility and the rentai income this could pro- vide," he said.
