-1-I.- 6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, May 22, 2001 COMMENT Sign destruction flot reflection of Milton Last week's destruction of H.D. Investment's sign was unfortunate, but it wasn't a reflection of our good community in general. As reported on today's front page, the $1 ,400 sign advertising the sale of homes in the controversial development near E.C. Drury High School was destroyed sometime overnight Thursday. The family home of H.D. Investments owner Dave de Sylva also received a phone caîl from a young n-an stating the de Sylvas had destroyed his dream. It's certainly true that many residents in the area see the housing development as an intrusion on the property they have come to enjoy as parkland, and are frustrated that they couldn't stop the project. But they take pride in the community and don't condone criminal acts. Although we understand how upsetting this must be for the de Sylva family, it's important to remember that this was likely an isolated inci- dent committed by one or a few individuals who foolishly felt they had something to gain. In actual fact, ail they will gain is a criminal record. So in response to Mr. de Sylva's wife Darcel, who's now questioning the type of community Milton is, we ask her to keep in mind that the town is mostly made up of caring, law-abiding citizens. O UR R FADER S WRITE Leaving Ninth LUne in Milton most practical WilI ail the expense to restore Miil Pond be n wq-tW4lS N vvua aarbaar' ------ -n Dear Editor: Here's the whole story of the Ninth Line request for amalgamation wilh Mississauga. A few smaller property owners are pushing amalgamation t0 sel and get away from the past 25 years of the Parkway Belt Corridor, Hwy. 407, and now the new transitway corriIors' possible l5-year encumbrance on al properties but two. Ile few larger prop- erty owners would also like 10 escape the encumbrances, and seli for big money if possible. The transitway paralleling Hwy. 407 with passenger terminais and huge parking areas and service roads may neyer allow for development, even with amalgamation and certainly not in the govemment's 15-year ime framé2.- Residents say they have no services, but Mississauga is providing cross bor- der services 10 a few residents at a fair cost. Amlgamation with Mississauga will not mean -free services," as some think. It could mean a 25 10 30 per cent lax increase to those emaining. Leaving this corridor agricultural as a buffer with parks and play areas is the most practical, and to remain Milton. Walter J. Traftord Homby Dear Editear: For the past months we have been walching the pond coming 10 ils completion. Suddenly we noticed a pair of Canadian geese starting 10 build a nest on one of the mounds. LasI week we noticed thal she had had six babies ail being careful- ly Iooked after by their parents. We have not seen anything in The Champion about this episode, which I think would have been real- Iy nice and interesting for the neigh- bourhood. On Monday moming, there were two parents busily searching the pond for their six goslingir - for two days they searched, and in their own way cried out for their babies, which couldn't be found. We walked around the pond and couldn't sec any signs of them, only a snapping turte, which 'm sure wasn't left in the pond when it was under construction. Was it put there by someoe who just needed to0 gel nid of it, and in retum the geese lost their family? 1 just hope thal no other geese decide to nest in' Milîon's pond because the same thing could hap- pen aguit. Ail you can sec when you walk around the pond are garbage cans full 10 the brim and summer hasn't yet started. lu al Ibis expense 10 try an make Milton's pond look better going to be a waste? And a garbage dump again?
