I*IIA Resuits0f Asha Reser chtd Recently tbe results of the asthma research study were publisbed in the New England Journal of Medicine. Wbile there bave been numerous studies that overwbelmingly demonstrate the benefits of chiropractie care for children with astbma, this recent report bas substantial methodological weaknesses that cal mb question the frndings and con- clusions of the study. The basis for expecting benefits from chiropractie adjustments in people with asthma are twofold; 1) reflex imi- tation of somatic (muscular) and autonomic (organs/glands) nerves a t the spinal and nerve root levels is caused by vertebral subluxation and 2) this mechanical and neurological dis- turbance affects chest wall function and alters airway tone and responsiveness directly or by nerve iritation. Chiropractic theory states that correction of the vertebral subluxation by adustment restores normal mechanical and nerve funiction thereby împroving airway function and the resolution of asthma. The study examined 80 kids from the ages of 7-16, of which 38 received regular chiroprac- tic care and 42 received a sham or placebo adjustment. AIl of the participants were examined and tested at regular intervals at the - Freestone Research Clinic in Hamilton. - - The results sbowed that there was a sub- -r stantial improvement in symptoras, quality 1~ of life and marked -. reduction of Beta- agonist drug use. There were sligbt increases in peak s. expratory lung vol- umes. However, the resuits in the placebo group were almost as good as those in the adjustment group. Because of this, the report- ed scientifie and medical conclusion was that the chiropractie adjustment was flot effective. At this point, we must recognize that there was a flaw in the study with the so called "sham" adjustment group. The placebo manipu- lation performed was a very vigorous hands on manoeuvre, similar to an adjustmnent except for an "audible" pop. Because of the iniput into the spinal column and nervous system, many chiropracic authorities concede that the sham manipulation was indeed dloser to a "sloppy'2 adjustment. Indeed, the feeling is that it is almost impos- sible bo perform a placebo adjustment when there is a significant laying on of hands with the proper intent. Further study should be conducted 10 exam- ne and improve the placebo adjustment and examine the mechanisms and effects of the verte- brai subluxation complex. Again, the bottom line.of the study was that almost A of the participants experi-- enced a marked , ~ reduction of drug '-- use, decrease of asth- - ' ma symptoms and , an increase in quafi- ty of ife. the conclu-- sion is clear, if you or your child bas asthma and a vertebral subluxation, see a chiroprac- tor.
