6 - The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, May 8, 2001 SCOMMENT.. Hais off to students for MASVBOY TYDRI their accomplishments Congratulations to the 14 Milton elementary and secondary school students recognîzed by the Halton sehool boards for their achievements. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, -10 local students in the public school systemn and four in the Catholic system are being honoured for excellence as part of Education Week. The awards are flot just given for academics, but also athletics, community work, citizenship, family commitment and leadership co skills. Many of these young students are likely our future leaders- ones who will one day play significant roles in their communities as well as their chosen professions. Judging by their accomplishments to date, we'd say the stu- dents' continued success is guaranteed. Thank you, students, for the contributions you've already made to the community. Tint Colea Preîducuion Muanuager The Minou CananOan ebueupine ina Reepulabte Pendant 'Miiiennîum ' in new Mill Pond gazebo name represents how the structure came about DeaiEditor: The Milton 2000 Committee. in honour of the town's milennium celebrations, spearheaded the building of the gazebo ai the rcstored Mili Pond, and a commu- nity-wide contest 10 name the gaze- ho was held. The contebt was weli-pubiicized in ibis newspaper, was open 10 everybody and anybody, and the namne chosen by the Milton 2000 ('ommittee (including our elected mayor) was 'Mill Pond Miliennium Gazebo'. I was bomn in 1940, two bouses nortb of the new gazebo, at my grandma Rasberry's, who was the local midwife, ran a nursing home and sometimes took in 'foundlings'. r i wouid have ioved 80 have had the gazebo named after her, but there are also many other past and present area [amulies and people who couid be so honoured. The much respected Martin fam- iiy comes.to mind, of course, after whom the town of Milton is named, as is Miii Street, Martin Street, Martin Flouse, etc. and weil deserved, too. The Miii Pond was a man-made reservoir of dammed up water used t0 mun the miii, which once stood acrosu the road, but it was much more than that to mont of us. We cut ice-biocks for our home food-coolers, learned to skate and play hockey on il, swamn in it, built rafts and fished, and had bonfires up the pond bank. season outdoor 'recreation centre' for Milton youth at that lime. As long as I can remember, it was just simply calied the Mill Pond, and I wanted t0 keep that littie part of my heritage as il was, and 1 believe 'Miil Pond Miliennium Gazebo' retiecto that. I aiso think miilennium should be part of the name, au that wao the reason for the gazebo being but, and 1 agree, after ail the hullabaloo that led up 10 the miiiennium(s) - 2000? 2001?- mont of uu have grown weary of the name ovenune. But some years from now, this, too, wiil be part of our heritage and memory. Oarryl Ezeard Milton Do you have an opinion on a local issue you want ta get off your chest?
