April 3, 2001 'CoAvïiIELvT is Î4..TIîv OK4 Easter Friday service DC a positive endeavour Agrand gathering of Christians will be held on Easter Friday when 1 hrhsrepresenting numerous faithos will gather for a common prpose - to celebrate the resurrection of Jeosus. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, the Milton Miniurterial Association hais plainned one large Good Friday service involving F members of Anglican, Presbyterian, Baptist, Alliance, Salvation Armny and Roman Caitholic faiths. t Hundreds of people are expected to attend the service ait HoIy Rosary Catholic Church, the town's Iairgest sanctuary. f There has been mixed reaction to the service. Some people have responded with enthusiasm while others feel uncomfortable with the idea. We helieve it's a positive endeaivour promoting respect for ail beliefs aind co-oiperation between religions. As Rev. Rod Lewis of Knox Presbyterian Church staites, the service - wiIl demonstrate the lairger body of Christ - a gaithering of praise, praiyer and reflection.0 What could be wrong wîth that? 1 Q 11 O UR READERS WRITE The problem is spending, flot revenue: Malboeuf Dear Editor: Your article conceming the municipal budget left out somne very pertinent infor- mation. The article neglected to mention that Milton has received to date more than $9 million from the Mohawk stot revenues. with another $6 million anticipated fron this year's revenues - a windfall of $15 million into Milton tax coffers. The article also neglected ici mention ihat il's expected that Milton will collect another $2 million of new growth-reiated revenues this year from building permits and new tax assessments. Add that to the $450,000 tax surplus from last year and we are looking at more than $17 million in new revenues for the Town of Milton. Town staff, supported by the majority of council, put a lot of time and effort into finding ways to spend this new revenue; and what they couldo't spend this year they chose to put away to spend at a later date. It's unfortunate that a littie bit of that effort wasn't put toward finding a way to give Miltonians some tax relief. Ast1 stated at council. we don't have a revenue pmob- lem - we have a spending pmoblemt. The article quoted Councillor John Challinor as stating that Milton had flot raised taxes in three years. That's flot the case. tn 1999. Milton counicil increased taxes by 6.6 per cent, offsetting a Regional tax reduction. Milton counicil bas approved increas- ing user fees, which us just another way of increasing taxes. No tax increases in three years, no way. As for his comments concerning better bail parks, roads, and an art centre, ai thote projects were and are a part of our Officiai Plan and were budgeted for long before the slot revenue windl'all came into being. But let us flot cloud the issue with the facts. Milton is very fortunate in that we have these new sources of revenue, but this new revenue has corne with a price. We're sec- ing our smrait tonen change due to growth and the people in the Campbellville area have had their quality of tiffe affected due to the increaaed traffic, noise and crime in their area due to the introduction of siot machines at Mohawk. The minimal 5 per cent tax rebate I neas suggesting was simply a way of compen- sating our citizens in a strait way. If now, with ail this new revenue is not the time for some tax relief, then when? Rlck Malboeut Local and reglonal councillor Noone es comlng forward to take the Iead-to coach Dear Edlter. As a long-lime Milton res- ident, Fve witnessed my share of changea to the town.
