Chiel Algar was presented the Gold Medal award lrom the Human Rights and Race Relations Centre in Toronto for his efforts in fighting discrimination and hridging thc gap bewecn the police and ethnic communities He's the fourth member of the Halton Regional Police Service to receive the award in the past live years. Previous winners included his predeces- sor, Peter Campbell (1997), lnspector (nohe a superintendent) Keith Gregory (1998), and Constable Dianie Hendry and her hus- band, Sergeant Ray Hendry (1999). The Hendrys were recognized for their work wîth Hands Across the World, an annual multicultural celebration tirsi held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Halton Regional Police Service. Constable Hendry was recently namied the service's new diversity officer. As police chief. Mr. Algar initiated PEACE - Police Ethnic And Cultural Education - aimed at attracting people from vartous cultural backgrounds and religions into policing.
