8-The Canadien Champion, Fniday,November 24, 2000 fHOW SOME COMMUN FOOTBALL TERMS FIT UNTO THE CONT-EXT 0F CHURCH LIFE: For the first time in Canadian Football League history the Montreal Alouettes will face the B.C. Lions in the 88th Grey Cup Cbampionship, to take place on Sunday, November 26 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Sports fans, young and old, will cheer on their favourite players as they aspire to win this coveted championship. As the attention of many individuals will be focused on football, I thought of how many of the technical terms surrounding that sport could be applied in a congregational experience. A quarterback sneak is when cburch members attempt to leave quietly during tbe altar invitation. A draw play is what many children do witb their bulletin tbrougbout the Worship Service. Haif-time refers to the interval of lime between the Sunday School and the Worship Service. A benchwarmer is someone who does not contribute to the service in any way. Sadly, this individual does not sing, pray, work, or give and is quite content to simply sit and do nothing. Having a backfield-in-motion is what happens when younger children in the congregation begin to make frequent restroomn or water fountain trips bo the back of the sanctuary during the service. Staying in the pocket is what bappens to a lot of money that should be given to the Lord's work. The two-minute warning is the point at which members of the congregation realize that the sermon is almost over and begin to gather up their personal belongings. An instant replay is used when the pastor loses bis notes and bas to faîl back on last week's illustrations. Sudden deo.th occurs wben the preacher goes into overtime and is often evidenced in the attention span of congregation members. A trap is particularly effective when the individual called on to pray for the special requests failed to pay attention as they were listed. An end run allows people t0 get out of church quickly, without having to speak to anyone. Aflex defense is incorporated far too often making it difficuit for individuals to personally apply the sermon's Biblical truth. A biiz best describes the pressing rush for the restaurants that follows the closing prayer. Hope you enjoyed those parallels! Consîder visiting a local church this week and take the first step towards reaching your personal potential and brîgbtening the future of those around you!
