6 -The Canadian Champion, Fniday, November 17, 2000 I COMMENT It's time again for us ~NE 'VIUO to ask for your help ý)HI -42YO IME LOoMIE In prosperous trnes, it's hard to belteve a child could bound out of bed on Christmas morning to learn Santa Claus bas passed them by. It's impossible to fathom the heartbreak of a parent who must coin- fort their child after being unable to provide them with a proper Christmas. So for almost two decades, The Canadian Champion and the Salvation Army have been working together to ensure no one in Milton greets December 25 wîthout a gitfrtei chlrno ade -/ quate food on the table through our annual Champion Christmas J Bureau Fund. U1 Last year, our campaign raised $22,000. The goal this year is $25,000. To reach that target, we ask that residents drop off donations of food, ~ Q toys and money at The Champion offices, 191 Main St. E. Tax receipts - will be issued. We know life is busy and money is tight. And it can seeru as. though * __ hands are always out asking for us toi give even more. But it's within our power to help a child celebrate Christmas. /I~ At this time of year, there's no gift like it. SO UR READERS WRJTE 1t' iihs-&lnnÉ-rt and guide aur vouth E.C. Drury Park by way of financial support and the donation of my time. attending meetings for Ibe general public and assisting in the fundraising projeet. I was shocked and disappoioted ta receive the Speciat Edition Newsletter, publisbed by the Fuiends of E.C. limiy Park, whjch recommended the candidates that we should cast our vote for in the municipal election. tn addition, il identilied the candidates who, for various reasons, were considered te, have put forth "disappointing per- formances" with regard 10 their support of the park. In addition 10, my personal opin- ion, l'm certain that I speak on behaîf of several people that bave supported the Friends of E.C. Drury Park in saying that Ibis is beyond their mandate. The opin- ions outlined in the newsletter aren't necessarily supported by al participants in the Friends of E.C. Dnury Park organization. Effective immediately, J'in wilh- drawing my support of ibis organi- zation. I will no longer wcar my 'E.C. Drury Park' basebail cap. I support the need for senior citi- zen housing. l'm very close to being a senior citizen myseli. Untortunately, ibis proposed hous- ing development hasn't been designed solely with seniors in mic. The only logic behind the referenCe to seniors is the modesi house sîze, one level living, on an undersized property, as well as ils placement in relation 10 town amenities. There are no facilities designed for seniors (recreation centre and shuffleboard, etc. There' s no guarantee that the pur- chasers of these homes will be seniors. Due 10 the density of the devel- opment, the highest in Milton, and the somewhat landtocked area, my personal opinion is that the devel- opmnent could become another St. James Town (Toronto) ti a few years. This needs 10 be recognized proposed development, but the entire town of Milton. The above should be the contin- ued focus of the Friends of E.C. Dmury Park organization instead oft expressing political propaganda. Len Lee Gowland Crescent Letters welcome The Canadian Champion welcomes letters ta the editor.
