Few hockey players have big enough feet to match the accom- plisbments of brother Darren (Mini) at the University of New Hampahire. The diminutive right Winger was recently named Hockey East Player of the Month, afiter scoring five goals and six assista in juat five ganses to lead bis team in acoring, and ait juan one point out of the conference lead. Earlier in the season ho was namied MVP of the Michigan Ice-Breaker Cup. The ohort version of bis hockey history for the UNH Wildcats includes winning the Hockey East Rookie of the Year award two semsons ago and finishing third in the United States in goals scored witb 3 1. Last year, as a sophomore, be led the Wildcats in scoring. As if thinga weren't going well enough for Darren, the addition of Jeff bas made it even better. Joli was at Laurier University and quite bappy there, so when UNH tried to recruit Win to join ebeir prograns he said 'Thanka, but no thanks'. At least at first. "Afiter 1 went down and saw Darren play a few ganses, t saw the aunosphere, and thought I'd like to play tbere." Had ho uit out a year Transferring meant Uiat he was forced to "red-shirt" last season, which means he wasn't allowed to play for a year. This is bis senior season and heas happy be made tbe change. "tt's awesome. 1 mean 1 feit part of the teans last year, even tbougb t couldn't play. This year it's great to be back and playing ganses."1 He said it bas taken bim a few ganses to get adjuated after not playing for a full year, but he is flnding bis niche on the team, nsostly as a defensive forward. There was no expectation that bu would be the sanse type player as bis brother, especially frons the coaches. "They know what my level is. I'm bure more for expeni- ence and leadership." The brothers have played together before, on the Milton Merchanta, where Darren set a league scoring record with 140 pointa, and Joli waa tearn captain. But, staetang on Uic same line together in the Wildcats first gaine was stiul special, especially considering it was against defending national champion North Dakota. "I had a little leg jitters during the national anthens," laughed Jeff. Darren said bu loves baving Jeff there with bis. "It's great, it feels like home. Not that I get homesick, but it's nice to bave fansily around." UNH began the season with a 5-0-1 record and made their way up to Uiird in the national rankings heading into last wrekend. It's almost always a sellout ant the Whittemore Center, which seats more than 6,000 fans. "It's a big Uiing bere," said Darren. "Me people around here like the college butter than the pros." Darren bas one more year of college eligibîlity left after this season, but he said bulieves tbu teans bas a shot at going ail tbu way tbis year. He ought to know what it takes, considering New Hamshire loat in overtime in Uic chanspioniship ganse when be was a freasan. Thse one thing the Wildcats are sure to appreciate this year, however, is that the only tbing better than having one Haydar on the team, is baving two of thens. it~~P~ mr~iMILTON __________________www.cogeco.ca NORTH HALTON STUDIO 2:1 Main Street North, -7il~ifl$~'i4e-Acton, ON L7J LIV9 (51I9) 853-4700 TI 1 F (ANADIAN CI IANIPION FRIDAY, No\"Iý',,\,IBI-'IZ 10, 2000
