6 - The Canadin Champion, Tuesday, October 31, 2000 * O M N CAN You GIVE ME A COMMENTPACK WITH A DIFFERENT Please be cautious of kids tonight, drivers ILED AETAOE A recent national newspaper reported children are more apt to be hurt by cars tonight than doctored bags of candy. That means there's even more reason for drivers to be on alert while wending through streets filled with littie ghouls, goblîns, cowboys and princesses. Parents should also ensure their child's costume is as safe as it can be. Make sure a mask has appropriate eye-holes, allowing for clear vision. Better yet, forego the fnask completely. Ail costumes should also allow free and easy movement, and be bright enough to be seen on dark streets. Add reflector strips if necessary. And even in familiar neighbourhoods, children should be accompa- nied by an aduit as they make their rounds from door to door. That razor blades lodged into candy or other horrors has been fin- gered as something of an urban myth doesn't mean parents should relax their vigilance on that score. Better safe than sorry. On the other hand, aduit suspicion shouldn't cloud children's enjoy- ment of this spooky holiday. When it comes to Halloween, thrills ar)d chilIs are definitely part of the package. Sanitizing ail the fun away would just be too scary. O UR READERS WRITE Reader irked by articleon federal election 'çA moment of silence not much to ask for' Deair Editor; *Your front-page story in the October 241h edition, "MP Reed ready for fail election," leaves me wondering why 1 subscribe t0 your paper. 1 thought tisat you would a: least make ans effort to appear unbiased in your coverage of the Federai election, but that was clearly too mucis 10 ask. (The following letter was addressed to Mr. Papke and a copy was filed with the Canadian Champion.) Dear Editor; t would like to introduce myseif. 1 arn Darren Yorke. 1 attend Grade 10 ai Milton District High School. As you know by now, three teenagers like myseif, Rory Dick, Mark Everson and Travis Toth were killed on September 28, 2000 at 4th Line and 22 Side Road in a homrfic car/train acci- dent. 1 knew ail three of them, partic- ularly Rory Dick. He wait just like a second brother to me. My broiher, Mai, attends E.C. Drury High School, and Rory was his best friend. Rory would always be ai our house, and naiurally he was just like a family member and was just like a second brother to me and a third soto my par- ents. So when I heard the trsgic news I was hysterical. We were so highly thought of by Mrs. Dick, she asked our entire famnily to sit at the funeral with her family. When 1 asked her why we were sinting with the immediate family she said, "we can'B allow other brothers to not sit with the fami- You may or may now know that E.C. Drury is doing whatevcr necessary to help oui these teenagers. A moment of silence everyday when called upon, iheir favourite song played on the PA. These were just some of the thingt E.C. Dmury administrators did for their students. So when 1 got back to school 1 was under the impres- sion that MD would so the saine. They did not. When 1 asked Mrs. (Bars) Singleton for a moment of silence she said, "I have to say no, because it is a BOARD poli- cy". "Since they didn't go to our school we can't shlow a moment of silence". Ail M. did was set up guidance counisellors. Why should we allow a border to divide friendship? We shouldn't, so in thai case why ix il that the main reason our inchool can't give a moment of silence is because Ontario Street is in the way. Friendship goes above and beyond Ontario Street. I thoughi that reason was foolish. Bishop Reding gave a moment of. silence. 1 know they are in a dif- ferent school board, but certainly the Catholic Board ix not more compassionate ihan the public board. How is it that we misscd the opportunity? - sal TEEN on page 7 Pbud by Steve Nease
