26 - The Canadien Champion, Friday, October 27, 2000 MD 's senior football team continues late-season push By MURRAY TOWNSEND Special ta The Champion Milton District's senior football team had a duffel bag full of handy excuses for losing when they went on the road last Fniday at Iroquois Ridge. But, excuses are for losers, and the Mustangs didn't need them in their 30-15 victory. Milton District was playing afler jus( two days rest following an emotionally and physically draining contest against Burlington Central, versus a fresh team that had a week off. On top of that, the Mustangs have been decimated by injuries, and Iroquois Ridge had performed well againat some of their common oppo- nents. The Mustangs didn't have a good start to the game. Iroquois Ridge used a triple reverse to retum the kickoff 40 yards and then threw a bomb. Two plays later and the Mustangs were down 7-0. That was about the Iast time they'd get the best of the Mustang defense until the last couple minutes when Milton had their sec- ond and third stringers in the game. île team made a couple changes defensively, as well, and were able to defend weil against the frequent passing game of Iroquois Ridge. On offense, lan Robinson gos the first touchdown for Milton District on a 30-yard sweep. Impressive air strike Mark Grimwood then hit Ryan Groom on a 15-yard siant pass, and earned the two-point conversion when he found Lewis Depratt in the end-zone. Grimwood, who was 9-14 for 160 yards on the gdme, threw his second touchdown pass to Greg van Es, this one for 50 yards. Kris Beal ran 10 yards off-tackle for the final major. "Our team has really started to come together," said head coach Ed Stavnitsky. "There were some really great plays made by a vast number of people. From the beginning to now we've lost seven starters. 1I was very concemed about this game, and thse kids responded wonderfully. They were like a well-oiled machine out there." Stavnitsky had several oeasons for why the Mustangs have been playing so well. One is that the team's attention to physical fitness is starting 10 pay off, especially late in games. Another is the way the injury replacements have responded so well, and a third factor is the addition of a sled for practise. Milton District is now 3-2 and play their final regular season game today at home versus Burlington's Lord Elgin Lancers.
