Murder suspect br agged to undercover cop: triïal By IRENE GENTLE The Champion Accused murderer David Fiorino bragged to under- cover-police officer Ken Watson that he killed Stephen Andreopoulos, then removed ail possible points of identification from the body, a jury heard earli- er this week. "He said that he'd used a gun. cleaned up dhe ares, that he'd taken him to a bush, knocked out his teeth and cut off bis fingers," OPP Det. Stephen Boyd testified during an on-going trial at Superior Court in Milton Monday and Tueaday. Det. Boyd was involved in the investigation of the July 2, 1996 disappearance of Mr. Andreopolous, 36. Wire tapa, personal notes and conversations between Des. Const. Boyd and others on the investiga- tive leam were thse basis of bis tes- timony. Mr . Fiorino, 27, a former Milton resident, was charged with first- degree murûder February 14, 1998. The charges followed the discov- ery of the Barrie resident's body buried in a Derry Road field by Bell School Line in Milton. Mr. Fionino becamie the focus of the police investigatiôn when hie seemed to cornte into a large sumn of money the day after Mr. Andreopolous diaappeared. He was aiso considered the last person to aee the victim alive after the pair met up, ostensibly to carry out an illegal liquor deal. Conat. Wataon'a initial mIle in the investigation was to befriend Mr. Fiorino, Det. Conat. Boyd told the court. But the pair soon began planning the <fictitious) execution of another person at the beheat of a aecond undercover agent, Bill Campbell. Mr. Fiorino intended to use plas- tic wrap to dispose of the second body, said Det. Boyd. "Fiorino waa laughing, saying Watson would be shooting a dead man because David would get the jump on him," hie told the jury. But in October 1997, Mr. Fiorino backed out of the plan on the grounds that hie thought botb hie and Conat. Watson were being fol- lowed. He proposed committing an armed robbery of weddings as a money-making alternative, aaid Det. Boyd. In conversations with Const. Watson, Mr. Fiorino made refer- ences to the murder of Mr. Andreopoulos, court heard. He mentioned he kept a momen- to of the killing in the formn of a flyer released by the OPP about Mr. Andreopolous' disappearance. And hie demonstrated how to destroy a body by dmopping acîd hie kept in a white jug on a penny. The white jug and its contenta were later found in the garage of Mr. Fiorino's home during a January 9, 1998 police search. The t'lyer was found in bis wife Kim Fiorino's jewelry box. But at that time Mr. Fiorino denied any involvement with the murder. "I didn't murder Steve. I swear to God, 1 didn't do it," Det. Boyd testified hie bold him. He said Mr. Fiorino acted oddly as police seazched bis home, ateer- ing the conversation toward the discovery of Paul Bemardo victim Ksisten French years ago. Then Mr. Fiorino appeared to panic slightly after police found the white jug and the flyer, the officer testified. But hie insisted hie had nothing to do with the murder. "The tnith will corne out," hie quoted Mr. Fiorino as saying. "I know you guys are pointing the finger at me. 1 have too much to lose and I won' t let any harmn corne to my family." But when asked if hie felt bis lamily were in any danger, Mr. Fiorino said no. The trial continued yesterday. Citzens can stili have their say * ram SMALL on poge 3 unlil 4 a.m.," hie said. 'lThe quality of life where we are bas declined. I'd just like to see a police presence on tise roads.Y A youth centre aimed as keeping kida on the straight and narrow was also favouoed by Mr. Van Alstyne . And Anme Eadie, who appeared before counicil bots as a representa- tive of the Milton United Way and a taxpayer, aeemed unconvinced of the value in setting up a communs- ty founidation for the hall million dollars. Run by an independent citizens board, a foundation would decide how to spend the interest of the allocated money, allowing thse prin- cipÏal to build. Thougb in favour of spending only tbe intereat - which would continue su grow along witb the principal - she bad doubla that alot revenue would be enough to keep the fund rolling. "Community founidations have to go to the community to raise funda in perpetuity," she said. 1I don't know bow the Town is boping to do that. The only money t've heard going into this is the alots.", Any resident still interesteti in having their say can write, fax or e- mail the Town with suggestions.
