6 - The. Canadian Champeon, Tuesday, Juiy 18, 2000 __________________________________________ It may.1.v sound like it's over but it likely isn't In some cases, even when it's over, it isn't over. A recent announcement from the Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Tony Clement stated that the issue of Flamborough hooking up with Halton and other surrounding munîci- palities is dead in the water. It was sunk by the likelihood of soaring tax and water costs for Flamborough residents if they snuggled up with anyone but their cur- rent partnier, Hamilton. But like the ghost ships of legends past, this issue is almost certain ~- to nise again. Govemment is on a roll these days, and the trend is to bulk up in- order to slim down. In other words, amalgamate areas into large 4 . ~ . mega-cities to reduce politicians and overail costs. When the issue first warmed up, it was widely believed that Halton would soon creep onto the Province's radar screen. With the question of Hamilton now settled, that's even more likely. Maybe next time it will make more of an impression on residents, F ~ E ' tN I i-E W S who largely greete the first go-round with a yawn. ________________N___________________E __________ SO UR READERS WRITE 1 shouldn't becharged for brown water Nobody llstened when we suggested ozone (lu ejbUowtng leufer wan sent to Greg Ellis. Lucie Bullock Mouintain Vlew Drive Dear Editor: Why je the Region's proposai to ozonate Halton's lake-based water such a good idea today yet when the Milton Ratepayers Association suggested the samne proposaI, the ides was deemed to have no menit and no basis in fact by both Milton politicians and Regional staff'? Look ait their argument as stated in the July il edition of The Champion. i quote, "Ozone is con- sidered to be 80 times more effec- tive s a disinfectant than chlorine, and contains a ftlter aid and smell, taste and colour-reducing agents. You'd be getting the equivalent of the best of bottled water available from the tap, said Halton's Planning Director Pat Murphy." Some of our local politicians and most of Regional staff patronizingly îgnored us claiming we weren't "ýexperts" on the matter. Recent history wouid suggest that there have been no experts on Milton counicil or on Regional staff. Okay, that was yesterday but what about today? Now that Regional staff has blundered across information readily avail- able to almoat anyone they could perhaps chue our local politicians ozonation of Milton's well water in order to eliminate the problems they collectively created in the tirat place. Town counicil is absorbed as to what type of writing or logos should be put on the water tower being constructed on Steeles Avenue. I'd suggest the council motto of 'Ignorance is Bliss' be included as a lasting reminder to, citizens that if you want things donc right you have to be a partici- pant in the solution..
