~*'OUR READERS WRITE Niagara Escarpment a big part of our identity Dear Editor: Mr. Bjelic's letter to tise editor of lune 20 made reference ta Eacarpment Country while abject- ing ta tise quarries found along tise escarpment. As presidens of the Milton Chamber of Commerce I would like to take this opportunity to explaîn to your readers what Escarpment Country is. Escarpment Country is a regis- tered trademark of tise Milton Chamber of Commerce and was established by the Escarpmens Country Tourism Committea of tise chamber in order to create an easi- ly-identifsable theme tisai capital- ized on our ideal geograpisical location, namely the Niagara Eacarpment. Tourrsm han been identifred as a primasy industry in Milton and one that could benefit with further eco- nomic development. Tise Escarpment Country Tourism Committee is a marketing and pro- motional alliance of partner busi- nesses and associations ail of whom rely on touriats/visitors for tiseir business success. Milton/Campbellville and sur- rounding area attracta well over I million visitors eacis year. Escarpment Country Tourism includes Conservation Halton and ils 9,000 acres of parkland centemd on tise Niagara Escarpment. R con- sista of Moisawk Raceway, season- ai faim and festivals, ares market gardens, pick-your-own-farms, an ostricli farm, museums, sports venues, estertes, sccommodations, art and antique galleries, specialty shopping and mucli more. We cur- rently have 4ipartners. Those of us who live in Milton, Campbellville, Kilbride, Moffat, Bmokville, etc. are fortunate to live in an area thst can offer Sa mucli within minutes from our homes. This is evident in the number ai people who will soon be calling Milton their hometown. The Eacarpment is a unique area that's very mucli an integral part of the identity of ail residents of Milton/Campbellville and sur- rounding amas. Michael O'Gorman, prealdent Milton Chamber ai Commerce It 's really very lonely out here in tax relief Iand * tronc CASINO on pages isow council cen spend tise casino revenue better tisan taxpayers couid. I can understand tisat Milton may need more spending because taxes have been isèld down and tisere will be a need ta bridge inta tise new development period. In normai times, cauncil would budget as much in new spending as taxpayers wouid stand for in tax increases. TisaI ia a healtisy contrai mecisa- niam. In tisis case, they have grabbed a stmam of revenue tisas in effect doubles tise tax revenue and don't want 10 give any.back. My suggestion is for council to dedicate tise total stream of casino revenue, in principie, ta tax relief and tisen ta prepare several levels of incremental project spending for discussion with tise public ta deter- mine isow much of tiseir $600 each taxpayer would like ta return. Having tise $600 in taxpayer pock- eta rallier than council's retums tise lieallhy balance ta dia procesa. I believe tisat tise oniy option for a responsibie council is ta reverse the lune 12 decision and either isead in a new direction or defer tise issue, and the maney, ta tise next council in December. I ask taxpay- ers ta please write ta tise Tawn or speak ta yaur counciior. At tise lune l~ meeting I iseard a comment tisaI only one taxpayer had suggested using casino revenue for tax relief.
