WHERIE? WHAT? HOW? P rovinceV orders casino freeze By IRENE GENTLE The Champion AIl bets are off for turning Mohawk Raceway into a fullj casino in the near future. The odds turned after Cabinet decided last week to hold off rolling the dice on any new casinos in the province for a three-year period. Thse one exception is an Easter ntai comsnunity, which couid see a casino buis if giv'en tise green iight by its residents. Tise freeze will ailow the Province to study the social impacts of gaming, I expianed Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh. "We want to se what happens when it seules down," he said. "Let's go slow on this." Potentiai probiems sucis as crime and poiicing, traffic and addiction risk will ail be put under the microscope. 'After s year you can see what actsially happens," said Mr. Chudleigh. Tise news was greeted with a shrug by Mayor Gord Krantz. "I don't have any problem with regard to s foeeze," he said. "It really does give you s chance to catch your brealis. Tisere are a lot of questions looming out tisere." The ides of slamming tise lid on new casinos isas been kicking around since Febniary. said Mr. Chudleigs. But news of tise moratorium slowly trickied out tisis week to shlow municipali- ties like Milton to decide whetiser to hold a referendum on tise issue this November. Under current guidelines, casinos are given tise nod only after comrnunity approval is received via a referendum. Referendums are tied to municipal elec- tions and in this aréa coutd be initiated by either tise Ontario Joèkey Club or tise municipaiity. Mr. Chudleigh would like to sec tise public puise taken tisis November despite tise announced deferment. "I'd stili hîke to sec tise issue put on tise ballot," ise said. "My impression is it would be approved." Tisat would stand Milton in good stead to compete with other slot machine/racing venues sucis as Woodbine Racetrack in tise future, he added. "l'd have likeri to sec Mohsawk have tables put in but if tisat's going to happen tisree years from now, tisat's ail well and good," said Mr. Chudicigs. But until tise Province reopens tise door to casinos, a November referendum would be a waste of time, sairi Councilior Wally Hunter. "If tise Province says you can't do it, there's no point in even talking about it," he said. -I don't particuiarly agree with gambling as a way to raise tax revenue anyway." Mr. Krantz said he beiieved tise issue shouid be put on tise back bumer until tise moratorium is lifted. Town staff estimate tisas Milton will pocket $6.5 million from Mohsawk siot machine revenues tisis year. Tise Town has netted $4.5 million in proceds since 750 slot machines were added to Mohawk last August. ýs, 1 v
