14 -The CanadianChampion,Frlday, June 23, 2000 Red 1li)ght ecameras> will be put to test this flu By IRENE GENTLE The Champion After more than a year of perceived foot-dragging, red Iight cameras are at Iast poised to keep Halton drivers on their toes. At least one camera is set to start snapping this October. The two-year test project aims to determine if s camera, which wilt be set up at slternsting Oakville and Burlington intersections, can effec- tively stars the brakes on red light runners. "They're going to show the effectiveness of red light cameras versus police enforcement," said Halton's director of long range planning and transportation services Ho Wong. About $825.000 has been budgeted for the project over 24 rsonths. That's about the surs needed to improve one existing intersection, comptete with adequste turn lanes. noted Halton's planning commission- er Pst Murphy. And though some of the camera cos ray be recovered through Provincial Offences Act (POA) revenues, don't bet on it, he wamned. "We don't even know if we're going to get POA revenue," Mr. Murphy told councillors at a tate May planning and public works committee meeting. "If you're going to approve the report, don't do it on thse baais of getting POA revenue." CurTently 20 intersections are being examitied for the pilot project, ail in Oakville and Burlington. 0f those fine, will be selected. They'll be split into three comparable 'triplet' sites and monitored. One red light camera will then be rotated between an intersection at esch of the triplet sites. "The camera witl rotate between the three," 'qThey're going to "hW the etfiem of redlight cameras verasPoice e u F 1,oeu amt said Mr. Wong. "But the casing will be there so you won't know if it's there or flot." Another three of the nine chosen sites will boast increased police enforcement. 'he remaining three intersections will act as control sreas, which wiII be monitored, though no csmers casing or police enforcement will be present. The project was welcomed by Burlington Councillor Joan Lougheed. "Ail the improvements in the world won't change driver behsviour but I think these cam- eras will," she said. "I think they'tt show resounding succeas. That's what I project in my crystal bail." She said her constituents are tired of booriss behind the wheel behaviour. "It's probably thse single item I get thse moat calta about in terms of when is it coming," said Ms Lougheed. 'I think it's absolutely vital in terma of com- munity safety." The Province approved tise pilot projecta for six municipalities including Halton in January of st year. But progresa was slowed when some of tise approved regions found the Province's list of requirementa difficult to meet. Final sites will tikely be selected in September. Éc. 9. STEE-LES .
