The Canadien Champion, Tuesday, June 13, 2M0 -9 îTown council wants full con frol in naming streets By IRENE GENTLE The Champion When it cornes to naming local streets, Halton Regional Police may soon ha asked to get bast. Currently, new street names can ha vetted hy police if there's already a road of the samne name in a neaehy municipality. 'Me concemn is that rescue teama could ha mis- takenly sent to the wrong location during an emergency. But at last week'a community services meet- ing, Councillor John Challinor asked that the policy ha tcrapped. "We decide what we rinme our streets in this community," he said. "I don't think it's an iasue of puhlic safety. I'd like to have this commiltee settle lIais once and for ail." The issue arose over a liat of approved street names to, he used for upcoming development. In Milton, streets have historically heen named after local residents who have had an impact on the town. "We're one of the few communities in the country where our stoeet names-are researched," he said. 'We know why we name our streets." But police have scratched some names off the liai, and Mr. Challinor is hoping to put lhem back on. 'They've removed some names hecause they happen to have a family name that's found somewhere else in the region," he said. "I don't approve of us editing because we're concemed about what they think. That's what we've heen doing." Prominent residents, including war veterans, streets are adjacent to each other," he said. should ha recognized, ha argued. "There are very prominent, well-known,« deserving people who'll ha omitted if we allow police 10 name our streets," said Mr. Challinor. "They're Miltonians who have made significanl contributions te, this community." With commiltee'a approval, ha askcd to, hnng forth a complele, unedited liat of names for counicil approval on June 12. At that lime, Mr. Challinor also hopes to end the practice of seeking police approval once and for aIl. But Councillor Wally Hunter feared public aafety could heat5 riak if the police are kepl out of the procesa altogether. "There are somelimes safety issues if the But it'a unlikely streeta of the same name would be in close proximily, responded Mr. Challinor. 'Even when Milton is built out, we're at leasl four concessions away from north Oakville, aix from Mississauga and more than that from Burlington," he aaid. And taking away police veto power doesn't mean they can'l voice an opinion, ha added. "We've heen circulating (lIhe names) to them for approval," he said. "1 say lets circulate il 10 them for information." Thal seemed 10 satisfy Mr. Hunter. "'As long aa they've got the right to comment," he said. "Their commenta can ha critical."
