28 - The Canadien Champion, Tuaadlay, June 13, 2000 ~Milon tykes add to championship collection By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion The hardware haul continues. Two months ago at Memorial Arena, Milton's hockey tykea struck chaimpionahip gold at the Optimist Tournament. Now the saame group of boys - for the most part, anyway - have prevailed yet again. Only this lime they've donc so without the aid of pucks. skates or even ice. The rink rata' victory party came at the Milton Mavericks Lacroaae Toumrament, where they atrung together four consecutive wiflS to take their second tille in as many locally-based toumament appearancea. Capping ita undefeated mun at John Tonelli Sports Centre Sunday aftemnoon, the leam out- diatanced Burlington 5-3. This was the very samne score they recorded in the finals of the Optimiat Toumnament. But that's where the similarities would end. Late surge aida win Where the lykes led for moat of the hockey championship game, they relinquished two sep- arale leada and needed a pair of third-period goals to finally prevail in their lateat conqueat. And where the hockey club's scoring was spread out with five different players Iighting the lamp, it was one aniper who carried the lacrosse team offensively this lime around. Registering 1l goals over the course of the toumnament, leading marksman Scott Dermott punctuated an incredible weekend per-formance with four tallies againat Burlington. He delivered the gamne winner roughly two minutes into the final framre, picking the top right corner with a lengthy overhand. Dermott also atood out in the semnifinals, taI- lying twice to help shade Halton HuIs 3-2. However, Michael Sgarbossa provided the heroics in this one with the go-ahead goal late in the opening period. Dominance upstaged drama in round-robin play, as the local tykes humbled Mimico 7-3 and annihilated Nepean 12-2. Dermoît and Richard Monk had hat-tricks againat Nepean. Versus Mimico, Dermott and Sgarbossa led the way with two goals apiece. Backstopping Milton to its championship vic- tory were Trevor Rae-Hunt and Gavin Lecky. Also conlributing to, the title win were Steven Bennett, Brandon Denham, Brendon Farrell, Boendan Grant, .Robert Gray, Brandon Baggart, Tyler Jordan, Jamison King, George Kopas, Chris Larkin, Richard Monk, Ricardo Raduka, Curtis Rushton and Mackenzie Zuest. Novices outlasted Milton's novice squad w ould have been well advised to keep a little of their offensive fuel in reserve. The Mavericks scored nearly two dozen times en route to the semi finals - but once there, just didn't have enough left and were downed by Whilby 8-5. Bradley Hoy's three-goal attack and Katie Blasco's steady cage work kept Ihinga close. Also denting the twine were Brandon Rae-Hunt and'Ethan O'Connor. The novices were the moat overpowering local team during the early stages of the tourna- ment - blasting both Orangeville (9-3) and Nepean (l11-0). .: Jigy. kad a hat-trick in each of these games as well while also scoring three limes against Orangeville was Rae-Hunt. Arguably the most disappointing part of the was a qualifying round losa by the local midgets - the samne group of boys who'd taken the fille the last two years as bantams. Favoured 10 win the tille, they instead split Photo by GRAHAM PAINE A Milton pe.wee player races by a couple off Whitby opponienta during the Maverlcka' lacrosse toumnament Saturday. The Maya lost 6-1. their round-robin games and in the qualifying game were humbled by Caledon 7-2. Goals were regislered by Todd Ashby and Kevin Corbin. Jordan Lumb waa in net for the lopsided losa. The midgets -who have a couple of provin- cial field lacrosse champs in their ranks, in Matt Decaire and Kyle Gocrtz (who recently took the 'B' division cup with the Burlington Chiefs) - bejan îhe weekend by doubling up Markham 8- 4. Frora there they weretrimmed by Nepean 6-4. Goertz, Derek Blanchard and Mike Novak each tallied twice in game one while netted a goal and an assist in round two were Decaire and Lane Moodie. Peewees go winless Milton's peewees went winless over the week- end and failed 10 sdvance past round-robin play. Their closest brush witb viclory came in round one, when they grabbed an early lead but evenlu- ally seîîled for a 4-4 stalemate with Caledon. They then were bealen by Nepean 4-2 and dumped.by Whitby 6-I. Luke Moodie led their offensive campaign with three goals while singles were chipped in by Cole Madansky, David Majka, Ashley Rutz and Michael Vipond.
