,.2000 Dateline The Garden in June r hsis one of my favourite simonths! Irises and peonies are flowering and there are fat buds on my roses. There are quite a few garden chorea - other than weeding - that can be done this month. Pruning spring-flowering ahrubs is one chore that is often put off tilt fait, but there is no reason it can't be done in June. Any ahrub that flowered in April or May produced flowers on last year'a growth, s0 if you prune themn now, Ihey will have ample time t0 make new growth for next year's flowers. You cas prune for shape or for rejuve- nation. If you are rejuvenating an overgrown shrub such as a forsythia, prune out 1/3 of the oldeat growsh at soit level. Lilacs can be lightly pruned night afler flowening te remove the spent flower heads, but be careful __ new flower buda form directly behind the old ones. If you prune back too far, you'll prune off the new buda. FaIt flowening garden mums and asters should be pinched now te encourage bushiness and more flower heada. Remove the finit 1/3 of the stalk to just above a pair of leaves. For large clumpa of mumas, you cas do this with garden sheara; otheewise your fingernaila will do -- but wear gloves or youIl have green fingers! Staking of peonies, delphiniums, and other plants with a tendency t0 flop should be donc as soon as possible. You cas buy peony rings, but bamboo stakes and green garden twine witl work just as well. One of the things I leamed touning the English public gar- dens such as Sissinghurst and Hidcote was t0 use natural materials as plant supports - often pruned branches frora woody shrubs and trees are put int service as unobtrusive (and free) sup- ports for shasta daisies. mumis, and other perennials. Deadhead apent flowers t0 encourags further blooming on early flowennl perenniala. Bulb foliage can be deat with 100 if il has browned; tulil foliage can be pulled; other bull foliage can be cul back. But if il i stilt green, ]cave il! Photosynthesis i stil occumrng in green foliage, pro ducing energy te be stored in the bull for next year's flowering. Don't forget, toio, t0 take the lime bes' back, drink in hand, and jual look your June garden.
