Î ~ O UR READERS WRITE I CH has suffered serlous setback, says Snow * from ACTIONS on pages the honorary directors wbo had served with distinction for so many years and who bad a continuing interest in the foundation's objec- tives? The foundation had already suf- fered severe bases in the resigna- tions of long-time members includ- ing chairman Janet Mitchell, vice- chair Ken Moore, past chair Roy Wilson as well as members Bany Siater, Tony Beale, Bih Robinson. Ken Brandson, George Grummett and Alan Bennett among others. I agree that over tIse past year the foundation bas bad some problema. Tbe manner in wbich a number of long-time directors resigned or weoe asked to ectire was disturbing. The metbod of appointing the executive committee disturbed me. The decision -- made by whom I don't know -- flot to distribute complete minutes of executive committee and board minutes to the board, left the members in limbo. Since Mr. Hutton ceased to be the foundation's secretary it has been ail downbill and flot on the ski hilla at Glen Eden. It's in the opinion of many that conservation in the Halton water- sbed bas suffered a setback that will take many years to beal. The other board members, including myself, have flot only contributed thousanda of volunteer bours selling dinner tickets, books etc., but have donated thousanda of our own dollars to the foundation's projecta. t'm afraid CH bas cooked the geese that laid the 'golden eggs over the past 20 some years. How cas the foundation expect the so- called "big contributors" to have the confidence to make contribu- tions now? 'Planned giving' initia- tives are going to be very bard to tee now. Barbara and I have reviewed our plans to include the foundation wben our assets are divvied up when we pasa on. In tIse opinion of many, the recent actions caîl for a complete review of the actions and opera- tions of the administration. I urge CH to do juat that. JIm Snow, former director Conservation Halton Foundation Instead of intervening, we just brace ourselves Dear Editssr: Imagine a world in wbicb you can't walk two stepa witbout mn- ning into another person, a solitsry tnp to the country is unheard of and people bave to constantly worry about tbeir lack of food, water asd fuel. Well flot only are we imagining it, we're prepasing for it as a reali- ty. After being repeatedly told that witb tbe limited resources bere on eartb our rate of population growtb can't possibly be sustained, we continue to promote this trend tbrougb urbanization, expansion and planning. My amaîl town of Milton is a perfect example of titis detrimental progreas. Even we bave succumbed to tbe financial lure of expansion. I can only imagine tIse bebavioral differences that will occur as a result of the buman race becoming a virtual ast farm. If we truly are a superior species, sbouldn't we bave tbe foresigbt to prevent our own extinction? Based on tbe actions and atti- tudes of today, we are weaker tban the amalleat mouse killed by an unexpected predator. We know tbat it's coming, but instead of intervening, we ait back and brace ourselves.
