The Canadian Champion, Friday, May 19, 2000 - 25 Lack of players continues to plague Jr. Red Sox By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Milton's junior baseball team has had more than adequate plate pop through the initial stages of the regular season. Too bad il can't say the same about the num- ber of players available for competition. The Red Sox - who're averaging eight runs a game - have had a skeleton crew for ail three outings thus far, including Monday' s 12-il ioss to the host Stoney Creek Kinsmen. Only 10 guya made the trip - and of those, hall arrived at the bail diamond just in time to prevent a forfeit. The shortened lineup, due in large paet to com- mitments to high achool baaeball, left the club severely thins in the pitching department and essentially behind the proverbial eight baill before thinga even got started. Inexperience hurt team Kurt Mitchell and Andrew Neilson, neither of whom is anything close to a seasoned hurler, each worked four innings on the mound. While able to keep things somewhat respectable, their inexperience - plus a balanced attack from the opposition - was just too much for the visitors to overcome. Even with a six-rus outburst in the sintb inning to close the gap. Miltos had the winning run in acoring position in ita final at-bat but failed to complete the rally. "Those two really sacrifisced themaelvea out there," said manager Glenn Tumner, referring to his makeshift pitchera. "I'm aure their arms are pretty aore today (Tuesday). Once again a short bench really hurt us." If there's one bright spot so far, it's the team's late-inning offensive efforts. Milton has traiied by wide margins each lime out yet battled back to make things interesting - and were victorious in the come-from-behind roie with just nine players against the Erin Milis Athletics May il1 Highlighting the nearly successful rally in Stoney Creek Monday evening was Jordan Jeans. Making his season debut, the right fielder laahed out a two-run double in the ninth and fin- ished the gamne with a pair of bits and aa many runs scored. Jed Cosby scored three limes - after record- ing a singie, double and walk - while contribut- ing a couple of bits plus a sacrifice fly and one run was Todd Black. The i-2 Red Sox' home game with the Brampton Royais Sunday bas been cancelied. Milton travels to Mississauga North Wednesday night and are back aI Brian Beat Park next Sunday, May 28 to face Waterdown. Game lime, as always, is I p.m. Few good players needed for football, soccer action The Halton Invictas junior football club, which plays in the Ontario Varsity Football League, could use a few more players.
