According toi one former member, the Foundation has finessed words more often than fundraising at recent meetings. And with iff govemment funding slipping away like sand through an hourglass, maybe IA i something had to give. But did the situation have to be dealt with this way? Wasn't there some other appropriate avenue through which to address these problems? All- former Foundation members are apparently welcome to reapply for their old positions, but the whipiash quick dismissal of those who graciously donated their time and energy smacks of an arnbush. At first blush, the action appeared drastic. After further scrutiny, uncon- - scionable seems to be just as apt a description. SO UR READERS WRITE 'Bight' way ià wrong way for future of the world, says concerned reader Dear Editor: J'in wriling regarding tse contention by thse Business Couneil on National issues Usat thse Canadian standard of liv- ing is falling relative tai the teat of Uhe worid. Hunter's Guide shouldn't be in school: citizen Dear Editor: The Ministry of Natural Resources has published a guide that includes a section called the 'Fundamentals of Handgun Shooting'. The publication called the 'Hunter's Guide' bas been sent to bigh scbool librairies througbout Ontario. These guides arrived aI the ochool boards for distribution seben Premier Mike Harris was telling Ontarians that students wbo take weapons mbtc Ontario schools would be expelled. This long- promised provincial rule strikes sE the moEberbood issue of safe ochools. It seems to be somesehat of a moot point (to Premier Harris) thatschool boards across the province have been very detinite policies that address these issues. One cannot argue against the need for safe schools s0 Premier Harris' star will certainly not be tarnished by Ibis stand. On the other hand, this government-pro- duced guide bas sections witbin Fundamentals of Handgun position, grip, sigbting and aiming, trigger control, breath control, fol- lowing through and loadîng a bandgun. Included under eacb of these headingo are descriptions and illustrations describing the "bose to" of handgun shooting. The strange thing is Ehat the first paragraph of this section begins, 4The use of handguns for hunting is legal in sorte areas of the United States. tn Canada, you are not per- mitted to use a handgun for hunt- ing." So what's the purpose of ihis information in the Hunter'e Guide? 1 don't think many Ontarians believe that making this handgun information widely available to students is wise. 1 also believe that if a student should be caught with a handgun in a high school, that expelling that student is somewhat irrelevant. One would make the assumption that students bearing handguns in ochools are breaking several laws. Il seerus likely the handgun would be unregistered and a restricted charged and placed in police cus- Eody, effeclively removing the stu- dent from the school system. Premier Harris has brought for- ward the issue of the Tories creat- ing safer schools through policy implementation. As mentioned before, who can argue against a policy tbat it is claimed will enhance the safely of our children? This popular Harris policy rhetoric displaces attention on real education issues that stem from failed Tory education reforro. This govemrment continually brings for- seard one-size-fits-sîl policies such as funding fonmulas Ebat fail to fit any school board's needs adequale- 'y, It's obvious. Weapone policies should be substantially different for schools in the GTA,. verses schools in the northern hinterlands of Ontario. Let the individual board's elected trustees make the necessary policies for their regions. Paul Tate Sunnyvale Crescent Pud by Steve Nease
