But these movie-phony's have in a way paved the road to the phenomenon now sweeping the fitness nation by storm. Sharp yclps with crisp arm jahs and leg kicks have hecome familiar echos hy more and more children, youth and aduits around Mitton athietic centres and titness workout joints across North America. Recent health and fitness studies say martia arts titness programs are surpassing many of the traditional group exercise programs of this decade. White robes and cloth helts hold more tradition than many peo- pie understand. Cheaply-hudgeted infomnercials. such as the infa- mous Tae Bo workouts, may seem extreme and hoorish, hut the uhimate message is reaching out to everyone and the ancient art of karate has hecome a lifestyle for many. Lots of Milton interest Milton is home to sevtial martial arts schoots including the Tsurulaka Karate School operating out of the Milton Leisure Centre, which runs the successful cardio karate program. This program has seen appeal frum men and women of ail ages. "Karate right now is on a hit of a high," said James Burke, head instructor at the Milton Tsuruoka Karate School. It's very cyctical. Thanks to Tae Bo. tl has renewed interest in the adut population. But tl has always heen for the kids. For them, it's just to have fun." When Holtywood reteased cult-ctassic th~e Karate Kid, the interest of' martial arts began to grow among chitdren. Then throughout the years, with more appeal reaching adutts through the sudden health and hetter living craze, karate hecame more thanjust an after-dinncr activity for the kids. It hecame a lifestyte for the whole family. 1t's a funny inadequacy," said Mr. Burke. "The generat public niay not hc too interestcd in karate untit there is a video on it released in stores. For others, they are life- long trainees. They've had the benelitl of spreading the activity over to their life.' Karate and martial arts have kick-started a new way of life for many. The big push now for the future of karate is to attain a total mmnd and hody connection. More adults and children are expect- ed to leap onto the healthy body, healthy mind train as thousands already have.
