By LISA CARTWRIGHT The Champion Milton is the best com- munity in which to live because of the dedication of the people who cail it home, said a co-recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award at the Milton Chamber of Commerce Gala celebration Saturday night. "It's a great day to be a Miltonian," said Craig Thomas, who accepted the Citizen of the Year Award with his wife Kim. "We will cherish il forever and ever," Ma Thomas added. The couple receivcd the award during a gala evening at Granite Ridge Golf Club. Thse event also included Uic announce- ment of recipients Main Street Shoppers Dnag Mars owncr Don Bell, who received the Businessman of the Year Award, and Sale and Sound Children's Centre opera- tor Edwina Doddington, who eamned the Businesswomen of the Year Award. Menitor Suspension Systema Co. received the award for Business of the Year for 26 employeea or more and Halton Automoti ve and Industrial Supplies was awaeded for Business of the Year for 25 employeca or leas. Johmson honoured Native Miltonian Fred Johnson received the Lifetime Achievement Award. "I have worked with each and every one" of the nominees, said Mayor Gord Krantz before announcing the 1999 recipi- cnt of the Citizen of the Year Award. "Each and everyone deserves this award." Mr. Thomas agreed with the mayor, congratulating co-nominees Heather Penman and Paul Seherer for their dedica- tion to thse community. The Thomas' were both bomt and raised in Milton. "Our kids had teachers we had when we were children," Ms Thomas said. 'Thcy pîay sports with the kids of the kids we played with. It's comforting to say 'watch what you are doing because we will hear about it."' The Thomas' said they have always donc a bit of volunteering, but it wasn't until their daughter battled cancer when they started to do more. They're also involved with Curling for Cancer and Curling for Kids fundraising event as well as helping peo- ple who have family membera with cancer or are in bereavement.
