Town of Flamborough wants to hook up with Halton region Now it's time for Halton to have its say By IRENE GENYLE The Champion After aIl the rhetoric, the vote seemed to pass in the blink of an eye. It took lesa than an hour for Fleinborough council to, decide to sever its historic relationship with Hamilton- Wentworth in e nfear-unanimous 8-I vote Monday night. That mirrored the response of Flamborough constituents, who in both telephone polis and written surveys over- whelmingly favoured carving up the 34,000 town in order to hook up with neighbouring Halton region, North Dumphries Township/Waterloo region and Brant county. Tense relations between Hamilton- Wentworth and Flemborough. led the town to aIl but leap through an escape hetch pro- vided by Minister of Municipal Affaira Tony Clement when Hamilton was fin- gered to become a 'super city' through the Province's Fewer Politiciens Bill. Cost doesn't deter town On Monday evening, both residents and councillors said yes to a divorce despite dire wernings that it could cost Flemborough between $20 million and $47 million. The lower figure is whet Flemborotgh officiels figure it should pey to, exit the new City of Hamilton, scheduled to eome into being July I. But e Transition Board creeted to assess the cos of splitting up put the figure as high as $47 million, mostly to cover weter and sewer infrastructure coss. For residents of eest Flemborough, which includea Waterdown, Freelton and Carlisle, that bouls down to an annuel hike of between $482 and $790 per $175,000 home. East Flamborough is the portion of town most likely to join Burlington, and through thet becomne a part of Halton. Commercial and industriel taxes would likely plummet in east Flemborough should the Halton merger come through. In contreat, adding East Flemborough's 22,000 people and 48,000 acres to, the region is expected to cost the owner of e $185,000 Helton home an extra $6 in property taxes. And commercial tex rates are expected to increase by 1.3 per cent in Helton, while industriel rates should rise .3 per cent. Now that Flemborough hss definitely made up its mi, it's up to, their potentiel new partners to have their say. The Province makes the final decision. Helton will make its choice et e special regional council meeting scheduled for Tuesdsy. tt will be held in Council Chambers as the Regionel offices, 1151 Bronte Road, in Oekville. ~Small fuel spifi cleaned up There were no injuries in e smell ges spill that occurred et the Shel gas bar et Trafalgar Road and Steeles Avenue Wednesday.
