Photo by GRAHAM FAINE Clean bill of health No eateries shut down The Halton Regional Health Department didn't have to shut down any restaurants in 1999. in a memo to the health and social ser- vices committee last week, Halton Region's medical officer of health, Dr. Bob Nosal, said inspectors visited 250 food service facilities in Halton, including seniors homes, at least twice and 80 per cent received visita three times during the year. No restaurants were shut down by the departmnent, however two facilities cloaed voluntarily to carry out work required by inspectors. Six offence notices were issued, which Dr. Nosal said was a smali number. As welI, inspectors ordered food to be dumped. The food had been held for too long at high temperatures. In 1999, Halton Region certified more than 400 food service employees in a food safety training program. Dr. Nosal has called on the provincial government to implement Ontario-wide mandatory certification of food handlers and the grading of restaurants.
