The Province recently announced a $30 million boost to their textbook fund, aimeti at bringing better books to grade 10 students acrosa Ontario. The texts will he vetoed by teachers hefore purchase to ensure they max out on Canadien content and meet the standards for the new curriculum. The new books are expected to show up in clasa- rons at the start of the 2000120I school year. The funding announcement will act as a supplement tos $65 million grant already in place for high school textbook purchases. And that funding follows a 1998199 *investruent of $100 million 10 support the provincially-împosed new education curriculum. The curriculum is part of a Tory effort to reform educalion. partly by impoaing atandardized testing and consistent, easily- understandable report carda. 'lThese textbooks demonstrate our commiàtment to _quality education,- said Hakton MIPP Ted Chudleigh. "Ours is an on-going program -of renewal. The vast improvementa occunTng in education do flot happen ovemnight." Since the 1998/99 achool yesr, an annual boost of $100 million bas also been available for elementary students. Before tbe $30 million cash infusion, the Halton District School Board had allocated close to $640.000 for grade 10 textbooks. And the Halton Catholic District School Board was poised t0 receive a $236,000 grant for the grade. But how the new grant will be divvied Up between the two boards isn't yet known.
