ISchool board feeling pressure ifollowing controversial report By DENNIS SMITH Special fa The Champion The 'wheels are turning and tongues are wagging following proposais to build, renovate or close dozens of Halton public schools. A capital stratégic plan unveiled Wednesday recommended the Halton District School Bo ard spend $409 million over 20 years to build and renovate schools. The C.N. Watson consultants plan proposes building 33 new eIe- mentary schools and eight new sec- ondary schools in two decades. But it also recommends closing 12 elementary achools and four bigh scbools. E.C. Drury High School ix rec- ommended for closure in 2013, but construction of two new Milton high schools ix proposed before then. Currently, E.C. Drury students share shopa, an auditorium cafete- ria and playing fields with the Ernest C. Drury School for the Deaf atudents. *Vts very difficult for us," noted E.C. Drury High Scbool council chair Liz Munro. "We need a achool of our own with a vocation- al school attacheri." One surprise wax a recommenda- tion to close Central High Scbool. Burlington'a oldeat bigh achool would be converted to bouse junior kindergarten to grade 8 students and an adult education centre. Nearby Central Scbool, the current elementary scbool, would be closed. "We were nos cxpecting tbat at ail," said Debbie Downs, a Central Higb Scbool counicil member. 'Ilt clearly doesn't make any sense to any of us."I She feels Central Higb Scbool should continue bousing bigb. school students and grades 7 and 8s, wbicb it bas done for 10 years. Consultants bave recommended that Aldersbot Higb Scbool assume this set-up. "Tbey're proposing baving new sebools built for kids wbo are cur- rently bused, but tben our kids will neeti to be bused," said Ms Downs. Central Higb Scbool students would bave long rides to Alderabot or Nelson bigb seboola, sbe noted. "Tbey're robbing Peter to pay Paul." Her other concernas included combining adult and elementary arudenta and preaerving two bis- toric sebools. "Thse fight bas begun," said Ms Downs. "We don't want them to even consider this." Botb Oakville's Q.E. Park High School and Q.E. Park School were recommended for closure. Randy Lowe expresscd conceru tbe bigh school's closure waa linked to con- struction of a new bigh school in northwest Oakville. "Il's a dangerous link to make suggesting to people in Glen Abbey tbat the way to get a new school is to get those achoola closed," said Mr. Lowe, chair of Q.E. Park Higb Scbc$ol council. He added tbe bigb scbooil fully integrates grades 7 to OAC and there are renowned French Immersion programa at.botb QE Park sebools. 'The C.N. Watson report doesn't address the issue of French Immersion," be noted. 'Programming for kids is nol addressed very weIl." The proposed 2004 closing could discourage spending on thse achool and parents from enrolling their cbildren, be added. Burlington's General Bmock Higb Scbool is also recommenided for closure, witb its vocational sehool becoming part of Lord Elgin. It waa recommended the General Brock building be used for board adminiatration offices.
