The non-profit organization's goal ia to aid people who become physically disabled reintegrate into society. They do this by offer- ing a variety of aervicea and programas. The Ontario March of Dimes was launched in the 1950s by a group of mothers who wanted to finti a cure for polio. The-gmup marched acrosa Canada for dimea, aaid Sherry Saevil, area coor- dinator. Four years later, a cure was found and. the group turned its efforts to raiaing money for aduits with physical disabilities. Supported by the United Way, the Ontario March of Dimes receives approximately $12,000 every year fromn the organization. And to help more people with disabilities, the Ontario March of Dimes runs its door-to-door campaign throughout January. Last year's campaign raised about $1 .2 million with 80 per cent going directly to hclp people. The Ontario March of Dimes offers a number of programa and aervices including providing people with devices such an wheel- chaira, walkers and communication aida. They also provide finan- cial asaistance and job training programa. "Almost 80 per cent of Canadiana between the agea of 17 and 64 who have a diaability are unemploycd," Ms Saevil said. "We try to re-enter themn into the workforee." The group offers computer as well an secretarial, bookkeeping and accounting jobs. The organization alsohas contacts for different programas and organizationa that will hclp people deal with their disability.
