Young Purple Butterfly Woman is the native namne for the full-blooded Ojibway child who was placed in foater care with Milton resident Sharron Fergus when she wasjuat three montha old. The youngater is blind and mentally challenged with the mental age of about four years. Last November, a police ofcer and three Toronto CCAS workera took Purple Butterfly out of her Milton achool and permanently out of Ma Fergua' care. Since then Ms Fergus has been allotted only one aupervised visit. With the permission of the new foater family, she used it to videotape the care the cbild was receiving. And she bad boped to show the tape in a hearing witb the CCAS January 14. The meeting took place, but the videotape, along with other evidence, waan't permitted, aaid Ms Fergua. "*It waan't the hearing we expected," said Ms Fergua. In order to present ber case for regaining care of the child, Ma Fergus' lawyer Dino Mazzorato of "It wasn't the hearing we expectedL" ....... .......................... Hutchinson, Thompson, Henderson and Mott had sub- poenaed the principal and teachers from the child's former school. But he leamned shortly before the meeting that they wouldn't be permitted to speak. And Purpie Buttertly's mother, who can't be named to protect the child's identity, was also barred from the meeting afier travelling from Sudbury with her band leader to champion Ms Fergus' cause. "Il's part of their internai procesa," explained Mr. Mazzorato. "There's a number of steps. This waa more of a mediation procesa." When the hearing took place it was with CCAS director Mary McConville and two care workers. 'We expected bo be able to preaent evidence," aaid Ma Fergus. 'They allowed me 10 answer allegations but not present evidence to prove them wrong." But the next step is a meeting with the CCAS board of directors in which she and Mr. Mazzorato hope they'll be able to present their case complete with the videotape and other evidence. But some good did come out of the meeting, said Mr. Mazzorato.
