6 - The Canadian Champion, Frnday, January 14, 2000 SCOMMENT We have to take brown water with grain of sait It looks like residents will have to put up with brown water for awhile longer. As reported elsewhere in this newspaper, the Region has now revealled that a back-up well drilled in 1996 is likely the real cuiprit behind Milton's continuing brown water woes. The well struck a vein of naturally-occurring manganese that has been stirring up trouble in Milton's water ever since. Main breaks and pipe-cleaning processes can oxidize the manganese resulting in a flow of muddy-looking water from our taps. While the intermittent brown water is definitely an inconvenience and something we don't expect to see is this rich and industrializec! country of ours, at least we're now getting the straight facts concemn- ing the cause behind it. Other than assuring us that the brown water was safe, the Region really hadn't offered much of an explanation concerning the issue. Now we understand the magnitude of the problem is serious and one that will likely cost a substantial amount of money to fix. As of right now, there's not much else citizens can do but be patient and make sure they have a good supply of bottled water ready.
